No, we’re not kidding – Girls HBO is coming back. Lena Dunham’s critically acclaimed breakthrough TV series has been greenlit for another five episodes, with production to start in 2027. Dunham is set to return alongside core cast members Alison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke (who’s been delightfully moonlighting as an advice columnist at Elle).
In a statement to Variety, Dunham said in part, “We always said we would only return to ‘Girls’ if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop.”
Earlier this year, Dunham released her memoir Famesick, speaking about her rise to fame following Girls and her struggles with health and addiction. Most relevant to the Girls revival, Dunham characterized her former co-star Adam Driver as, “verbally aggressive,” saying he was temperamental on set to the point of throwing a chair against the wall. Famesick also touches on Dunham’s relationship with ex Jack Antonoff, including his closeness to an unnamed “teen pop star” in the waning days of their relationship.
