It can seem like a bleak time to be in college right now. With the rise of AI and an utterly dismal job market waiting for anyone entering the workforce, let alone a newly minted graduate, any one more cynical could very well make an argument against the pursuit of higher education. But when we tasked photographer Anson Tong and student photographers Tommy Maidment, Drew Neiman, and Abie Niedzwiecki to shoot and interview a cross section of students from around the country — in New York, Philly, Atlanta, and Los Angeles — the responses we received appeared to show that collegiate life was richer than ever. From environmental science majors studying the effects of the solar power industry on industrial agriculture to theater majors channeling personal experiences into their craft, interests were vast (and so were their music tastes).
Ahead, hear from students at New York University, Pratt Institute, University of Pennsylvania, Savannah College of Art and Design, and more as they share what they're learning, the music they're listening to, and their advice for surviving college.

What do you study?
I study dramatic writing.
Tell us about something in your bag.
Something in my bag I cannot live without is my headphones. They're Sony headphones. Not a plug. I just got them replaced, actually, because they were really worn out, and I feel like
whenever I need to lock in, I need music.
Can you tell us a fun fact about your major?
Donald Glover went to my program and so did Ayo Edebiri, and so did the writer of The Hunger Games. So if you want to follow in the footsteps of cool alumni, come back to Dramatic Writing.

Where do you go to school?
I go to Tandon School of Engineering.
Can you tell us a fun fact about your major?
I'm a bio major so something fun is that when I want to talk to people I could ask them what enzyme they think they would be.
What's a piece of advice you'd give to an upcoming college student?
To not worry and to have fun and, um, to skip class, but only if like... Wait this is bad advice. Run that back. My advice would be to check the shuttle times and be there every time five minutes before the shuttle comes.

What do you study?
I study fine arts.
Can you describe your fit?
Right now, I'm wearing some thrifted things. This is thrifted, and this shirt is thrifted. These jeans are from, I believe, either Gap or Old Navy. And then these Docs [Dr. Martens] are from my uncle. Glasses are...I buy direct. Cute frames, cheap frames.
What have you been listening to?
Lately, I've been listening to a lot of funk and jazz. I've been listening to like Earth, Wind & Fire, listening to a lot of Brazilian jazz. I love Brazilian jazz. Stan Getz, João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim, you know, people like that. Great music.

What do you study?
I'm an illustration major.
What's something interesting in your bag?
Right now, I feel like it's probably a staple for most art students, I have kneaded eraser. It's kind of like a basic eraser, but you can mold it to any shape that you want. And especially when you're drawing with a bunch of little details, it's really helpful to have.
What are you looking forward to learning this year?
When you're an illustration major you do a lot of book cover designs or movie cover designs, and that's what I want to go into. I want to create full illustrations and create a world that my own characters and creations can live in. I'm excited to do more of that.

New York University
What do you study?
Justin: I'm a humanities major with a concentration in creative writing.
Bé: I'm a sociology of education major.
What music are you listening to?
Justin: I've been listening to a lot of Chxrry. Her album just came out, I think, last month, if not
this month.
Bé: I've been listening to Tchaikovsky, and I've also been listening to Daft Punk. I just recently rediscovered [that] Kanye sampled a lot of their songs. I didn't know that.
What's in your bags?
Justin: I have so many poems. I have a poetry workshop class that I had to print out a bunch of things for,
and my bag is full of paper.
Bé: It's my busy day. So I need my cigarettes. This is one of three in here. I'm not going to show you the
other two because they're American and we don't support America.

What do you study?
I'm a global public health and applied psych major.
Tell us about your fit.
I decided to go for something green and brown because that's the hair I have. I just got my hair done. While I have this hairstyle on with the beads, I felt like it was very Afrocentric, and I'm from Nigeria, so I felt this look is very me. This top and these pants give a chill, low-key style, and I got the scarf as well to match with the whole color scheme. This is an outfit I picked to represent myself, my Afrocentric roots, and to give me confidence when I'm walking and going to class.
What's a piece of advice you'd give to an upcoming college student?
Make the best use of your time here because you're never going to have this much free time again when you're working 9 to 5. There's no summer breaks. There's no winter breaks. So please have fun.

Neil: Graphic design major.
What music are you listening to?
Rhys: I've been really into this band called The Mars Volta, and they're really great, and their two first albums, De-Loused in the Comatorium and Frances the Mute, probably two of the best albums I've ever heard.
Neil: I'm listening to "Next Move" by realyungphil right now. That's it.
What's a piece of advice you'd give to an upcoming college student?
Neil: Make sure you eat a lot of food, drink a lot of water, stay active, maintain hobbies and shit. I don't know.
Rhys: School's super important but you have to make sure that your body is good and intact. Like you have to take care of yourself. You know what I mean?

What are you studying?
My major is fashion marketing.
What's in your backpack?
I got in my backpack the go-to, shoutout to Enson Market, black truffle flavored Lay's Stax. These are an instant classic. They go with the fit, they make me feel fancy, and they taste really good.
What advice would you give to younger students starting school this year?
Really be yourself and do it for yourself. 'Cause there's so many people out here that think like, "Oh, what is this person going to think of me?" and it's all kind of like performance. But I think you really got to do it for yourself and focus on what you want to do and your dreams and your hopes and your goals.

What music are you listening to?
I've been all into ØWAY, Pz', Diamond, Tezzus, all them boys.
What's in your backpack?
I have a few things for my Intro to Fashion class. I have a few swatches, I have my computer, I have a few pencils for my drawing class coming up, and another notebook for my drawing class.
What advice would you give to a younger student who's starting school this year?

What do you study?
I'm majoring in fashion marketing.
What music are you currently listening to?
I've been listening to a lot of Yung Lean, particularly Warlord. I've been having that album on repeat. "Stay Down," such a good song. "Psycho" too from him that has Bladee on it. And a little bit of Crystal Castles.
What advice would you give to younger students starting school this year?
Just be open to a lot of change, and also cooperation. Especially inside of any type of design school, you really never know where you're going to end up. Like, I started in fashion design, now I'm in fashion marketing.
What's in your bag?
My Trader Joe's chai tea mints. I got to pop one of those every day.

What do study and what do you like about it?
I like acting because it was a passion for me since I was like 8. It has helped me process my emotions, actually, on a day to day basis. For example if something bad happens to me I obviously look at it in a negative light, like, "this happened, why did it happen?" After that happens, I’m able to zoom out and look at it in a way like, I’ll be able to put this into my craft and share it with others.
What advice would you give to younger students starting the school year?
Don’t get lazy. I skipped my first class today and I’m not happy about it. I’m not too proud of myself. Know that you have enough time to figure out yourself but you don’t have time forever.

I've been listening to a lot of The 1975, TV Girl, and Peter McPoland.
What's something in your bag that you can't live without?

What do you study?
I'm an Environmental Science major.
Can you tell us about something in your bag?
I'll tell y'all about the Thai basil. So this is one of the perks of being in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. They've been running projects on the other campus, the Ambler campus. They're trying to figure out innovations in the field of solar farms. So what we found is that solar farms and other agricultural places need the same land-intensive space. We're trying to figure out if we can combine them so that we're not using as much land. What it is right now is the solar panels are elevated on bars and stuff, and then there's the agriculture growing below it. They're growing plants and stuff. What they're finding is that the shade from the solar panels actually gives the crops higher yields because it's giving shade from the sun and it gives more control on the microclimate below the solar panels. And they grow so much of it because it gives so much yield, they just give it away. The food pantries can't take all of it, so I will.
What advice would you give to younger students starting school this year?
Just pace yourself, you know. Don't bite off more than you can chew. We got a whole other four years ahead of us.

What's something that you like about your major?
Civil engineering is cool, 'cause it's like, it's all around you. The sidewalks and the trash cans. You know, there's a lot of put thought into the designing of things that people don't really think about a lot, that they walk over every day.
What music are you listening to right now?
I listen to a lot of underground rap. I've been into a dude named iRokkout. That's the top dude I'm listening to right now. And a lot of that new wave in the DMV. I like Soho34. I like that ambient wave, like kllhhr, SIE.
What's a piece of advice you would give to younger students starting the school year this year?
Try and like put yourself out there. Get into things you might not have always thought of doing. There's always cool things that come from that.

What music are you listening to?
Mainly rap, hip-hop. Some city pop, like '80s city pop especially. Some shoegaze, idolgaze. And then a bit of indie here and there. kinoue64 has this really fire song called "Who Are You?" It's a shoegaze song, tough. Tiffany Day, Jane Remover. Sophiya. On the indie side, I'm still bumping Clairo. Honestly that recent album was really, really, really good. Also a shoutout to Ken Carson. Went to that concert, Xperiment. Was tough. Shoutout Opium in general.
Can you teach us something about your major or what you're studying?
I'm doing my senior thesis this year on how the Hollywood censorship system interacts with Chinese state film policy, because China and America used to be the same in that they were both like "state sanctioned" in a way, China a bit more directly, America not so much. But that's changed a lot over time and there isn't really much literature on that. I wanted to look at it in more of how it affects the content being made in terms of genre. What genre conventions get dulled down, flattened, subverted, those sorts of things.
What advice can you give to younger students starting school this year?
People say you have time: you do not have time. Figure out what you want to do and aim for it. The job market is terrible. I am lucky that I knew since freshman year what I wanted to do. Don't stress about things, but definitely treat yourself like you don't have time, because you don't have that much time.

What is a class you're excited for this year?
I'm taking a class with Kaitlin Pomerantz called Matters: Material Ecologies on where the materials we use in daily life come from and how we dispose of them. Just making me more conscious of the things that I use.
Can you teach us something about your major?
I just did a small project for that class I was talking about. I seam-ripped a map of my backyard into a piece of canvas, just 'cause my siblings and I used to forage and herp a lot, which is looking for amphibians or reptiles in our backyard. And then I sewed in some rocks that I found, just 'cause I feel that's a big part of my identity.
