Video Premiere: Memory Cassette: “Surfin/Body in the Water”
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Memory Cassette basically nails the sound of alienation in their music. Not in the “no one understands me” sense of alienation—it’s more like a slight dislocation, as if they’re trying to encapsulate those weird moments when you’re half paying attention and it feels like you’ve stepped out of your body to watch everything going on around you. It’s a half-disconnected dreamy pop, so it makes sense the band keeps making videos cobbled together from semi-obscure movie footage you can’t quite place. Or maybe director Pat Vamos just really likes Tawny Kitaen’s appearance in Crystal Heart.
