Video: The Roots, “How I Got Over”

It’s interesting to think that The Roots, with their years of dedication to craft and commitment to live tightness, might have become better songwriters by having to play meaningless rights free intro/outros to commercials on the Jimmy Fallon Show. It’s the equivalent of being Einstein and breaking your balls for years to crack the atom, giving up, going to work at Denny’s and seeing the answer in a plate of hash browns. Actually it’s not, but, like, what? How does this happen? Maybe we should go ghostwrite Soulja Boy’s Twitter for awhile and see if suddenly the next great American novel spews out of us. It won’t. We just want that job. #wecandream

    Dear Mr. Macia,
What you wrote is definitely funny and a good read. But Tariq Trotter’s lyrical ability is all that’s up for discussion here. He wrote the lyrics in this song. The members of the roots didn’t all sit around and each write 4 bars. Their musicality and precision as a band may have no doubt improved from the Jimmy Fallon Show ( like that saying, “How do you get to carnegie hall… practice”). But the roots are not a group that’s short on practice, having backed and performed with so many artists over the years, not to mention their tireless road show where they headline. I’m just saying, what you wrote is funny… but doesn’t make much logical sense. Do you own Do You Want More?!!!??! That’s an album where you might be able to say THE ROOTS have improved their songwriting, when ?uestlove and Malik B were all contributing lyrically and it was more of a collbaorative effort. At this point though, it’s all about black thought. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03ybqP7G6Po
