Video: Spoek Mathambo, “Gwababa (Don’t Be Scared)”

March 29, 2010

We were watching a show on the Mayan Apocalypse on the History Channel yesterday and learned that, if you adhere to December 21, 2012 as the date civilization ends as we know it, you should probably move to Malawi, Madagascar (?) or certain parts of South Africa before then if you want a chance at surviving the onslaught of volcanic eruptions and/or massive tidal waves. Assuming we do that, hopefully Johannesburg native/Sweat.X frontman Spoek Mathambo will be there to be our postapocalyptic leader, because as this video shows, he is both calming in the face of doom (Don't be scared...), and would outfit his posse in fairly dope survivalist uniforms while serenading us with dark township dance tracks smattered in Afrikaans Xhosa. This is the first single from his debut solo album Mshini Wam. It apparently drops around September, so since you can't wait that long Mathambo has also compiled a new mixtape under his DJ moniker HIVIP entitled Zuma's Kids V. 1, listenable here.
