Stream: Hercules and Love Affair, “Shelter (XX Cover)”

March 01, 2011

The "Shelter" Romy, Oliver and Jamie made was a ballad between one woman's voice, a guitar, and the vast and dull sound of wide open distance. Now our savior "nu-disco crew" Hercules and Love Affair have re-cast it as a sad but nutritive house song, as good as the one Jamie XX made from Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." Now, with a deadpan diva vocal, it addresses not one love lost but the well-being of anyone who seeks protection and relief in other people. On the other hand, this sounds like you bottled the '90s (the feeling of buying a mini-backpack in a bull-economy mall) into an essence. Now you can leak the stink of it into your workplace, your bedroom or wherever you'd like it to feel so crystal in the air.
