Blaqstarr’s Blaqstarr the Mixtape

April 12, 2011

When we spoke to Blaqstarr two months ago, we could swear he said this was going to be a Baltimore Club mixtape. It’s not, and it’s hard to say what is. The self-titled mixtape features Blaqstarr singing over minorly adulterated Amy Winehouse beats and Akon’s 2008 smash “Right Now,” a Rebirth-esque cock rock song featuring Talib Kweli, a few straightforward Europop songs, a “Shower Freestyle,” and “Tote It 2” which starts with Blaqstarr's old smash before morphing into a sped up version of Lil Wayne’s “Told Y’all.” Maybe that last one is the point of it all, a sound that originated in Baltimore clubs before blasting out across the world, wrapping in new genres as Blaqstarr toured with MIA, and he’s trying to rectify a million sounds into one. Calling this Blaqstarr the Mixtape suggests Blaqstarr himself is all this insanity. “It’s more like a universal cosmic situation,” he told us in that interview. “The sound and the vibrations of my sound travel worldwide, even to that new planet NASA was talking about. I receive signals from there. I consider myself a vessel.” Actually that does explains things.
