R. Kelly’s Memoir Gets Shelved

November 09, 2011

We've been riding the proverbial roller coaster of emotions this morning, what with the announcement (and cover teaser) of R. Kelly’s memoir, Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me and the swift blow that it will not, in fact, be released next week. Set to be his pièce de résistance, Kelly explained in the initial press release that Soulacoaster would be written from his own personal perspective. "I'm tired of being misunderstood. I will show you the tears, fears, and sweat. I will open my heart and reveal the good in my life as well as all the drama. I want to tell it like it is." Co-authored by celebrity biographer David Ritz, the book was meant to be an in-depth look at both Kells' triumphs and the demons trapped in his closet, but the most current iteration previewed on the Indigo Books website (who've also preemptively discounted the memoir 34%) positions it as more a a coffee table/scrap book—"part memoir, part keepsake." Despite Amazon pulling the book from their roster, Kelly's publisher, SmileyBooks insists: "R. Kelly's upcoming memoir is indeed still coming out and is slated for a spring 2012 release."
