Video: R. Kelly f. Keri Hilson, “Number One”
- story Matthew Schnipper
The best parts of this video—SPOILER ALERT—are R. Kelly wearing a purple scarf wrapped around his neck Amelia Earhart-style with matching purple sneakers, Keri Hilson’s wild Hammer pants and Kells literally patting himself on the back because “the sex is so good.” It’s wild that this ends up as an exclusive video on Yahoo. The meetings for that must be so sweet, Jerry Yang humming “Sex in the Kitchen” and being like, “Get me my own R. Kelly video or you are all fired!” He’s probably bummed Keri’s a chocoholic now, too.

- story THE FADER
The thing about R. Kelly singing/rewording/remixing today’s popular hits is that he kind of bests them. This is not a surprise, considering it’s, you know, ROBERT MFing KELLY, but it breathes new life into songs you maybe thought you hated because the radio plays them 74 times an hour. (NYC morning radio rotation: “Birthday Sex,” “Best I Ever Had,” “Knock You Down.” Repeat.) Of course Kellz kicks it off with The-Dream’s “Kelly’s 12 Play” because the man will never refuse an opportunity to be meta. This is Drama’s best Gangsta Grillz in a hot minute, no?

Videoclash: Flaming R Kelly vs Funk Flex’s Upper Lip
- story THE FADER
We’ve been really busy reading newspapers, watching the news, and checking news blogs lately (and also listening to music), so maybe we missed something. But apparently, Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex is mad at R Kelly for saying he likes young girls on a talk show. And R Kelly responded by releasing his video for the song “Skin” off 12 Play.
Freeload: TI f. R Kelly, “Life Of The Party” + “A Better Day”
- story THE FADER
Alright, yacht rap is nothing new to TI (see: “Why you Wanna” from King) or R Kelly (see: a whole lot of songs), so you’d think it was getting a little played out (it kind of is), but here’s the thing, if you listen to this song in the imagined context of TI’s upcoming album like we’re doing, it might work out. We know that TI is writing verses again, which actually means he gets contemplative even on songs about partying, so a whole album of TI vision quests over every type of beat would actually be awesome. We’re also posting this as an illuminating look at what it must be like for artists to record songs when a whole lot of shit is going down. “Life Of The Party” sounds like Tip called Kells and was like, Hey just record your verse through the phone and I will mix it from my house for reasons that are probably obvious. Of course, we could be wrong about all of this, but we’re also speculating about an non-existent album with potentially 3 to 4 maybe included songs. JOURNALISM! Just because, we’ve also included “A Better Day,” which shares one thing in common with “Life of the Party,” and that thing is TI singing. We’re not necessarily hating, but if you’ve already got R Kelly on your song, maybe just stick to rapping? Kellz is infectious though. (Both songs via 2 Dope Boyz)

Schnipper’s Slept On
- story THE FADER
Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Nick Cannon’s “Gigolo” 12-ich. Watch the video here , buy the mp3 here and read about it after the jump.
Freeload: R Kelly, “Body Body”
- story THE FADER
Just saying, but this R Kelly song, along with this is showing serious signs of a new summertime rap as easy listening trend that we’re actually into. Like, if relaxing is the new staying up all night, sign us up! There are bands that exist called Hammock and Windsurf, so making old man rap and r&b songs isn’t even that far of a stretch. Is there a yacht club somewhere we can join? Will Kellz be there covering “Lime in the Coconut”? Also, R if you are somehow reading this, we like stoner cartoons as much as anyone, but can you not use Aqua Teen Hunger Force vocals as adlibs anymore? Thanks. Not that we’re stressing about it or anything, we’re just drinking mojitos. It’s all good!

Freeload: Mariah Carey f. R Kelly, “Touch My Body” Remix
- story THE FADER
Here in sunny and beautiful FADER-land we have fully embraced this Summer’s crop of R&B jammers, including like half of Mariah Carey’s new album. This remix isn’t featured on the album but is notable because R Kelly is on it, and he is doing that awesome thing he does where he completely disregards whatever is going on in the original song and sings a verse about singing a verse plus some awkward sexual stuff.

We’re absolutely questioning Kells’ for his use of the vocoder here, like we get that it’s what you do these days and some dudes (T-Pain) do it really well, but come on R.! Whatever. The other thing about this, is that like every R Kelly song that isn’t an immediate banger, we keep coming back to it. Maybe it’s the handclaps, but more likely it is just the pop magic that is R Kelly.

Today is apparently a big day for Established Dudes Coming Back, after hearing a new NERD track and another Cam song, the next thing we’re expecting is like, a new Coo Coo Cal song. Until then though, we’ll have to make do with this R Kelly remix. Is it wrong to hope that Kellz will just appear on remixes of songs until the end of time?
