Did Rihanna Steal The “We Found Love” Video From Sandy Kim?

sandykim

It’s not the first time someone has cried foul on Rihanna for stealing ideas from photographers for her mega music videos, but FADER contributor Bryan Derballa has noticed more than a few similarities between her massively popular video for “We Found Love” and the photography of Sandy Kim. He’s thoroughly presented the evidence over on his site, so you can make your own call, but it looks to us like RiRi’s storyboard was cut straight from Kim’s diary. This kind of pop star appropriation has been news since Madonna stole the essence of “Vogue” from the gay ballrooms of way-uptown Manhattan, but even in a world of cultural give-and-take, Rihanna’s mimesis strikes just a little too much like the original for our taste. Tell us what you think in the comments.

    lol reaching
looks like any tumblr, any ‘photographer’ of the past 2-3 years same boring subjects same hazy styling
did the photographer steal their ideas from skins? i’m sure there’s similar screencaps to all of these
    zzzzz

  2. Brendan says:

Not a chance. These photos are hardly original. And even if they did take “inspiration” from the photos.
Its not stealing. One are sets of photos the other is a video, the shots aren’t even knock offs either.
    They are just similar scenarios.

ain’t nobody reaching….shit looks exactly the same. this might be the video director’s fault though. not rihanna’s. she probably has no say in her videos. or songs for that matter. shoutout to def jam records.

  5. sixpen says:

Definitely influenced, can’t say for sure it was a “rip off”. That’s a fine line, but it raises interesting questions.

Shame on @haggle for making such generalized comments without, i’m sure, actually taking the time to look at more of Sandy’s photos and judging her purely on these 320px screenshots arranged in a way to show comparisons between her photos and a RIHANNA VIDEO, not her personal story.

After going to Bryan’s site and seeing all of the other side-by-sides including the smoke bombs, I actually totally believe it and don’t find it at all surprising.

  13. Louie says:

    Oh PLEASE.

It’s not like half these photos are original ideas anyways. A grocery store aisle? A boy in a shower? A corn field? I think Sandy Kim is tight as fuck, but none of these are particularly ORIGINAL concepts for photos to begin with.

    OH PLEASE

  15. jkjk says:

ok, this is so lame. Those photographs are not original, they look like the usual suspects on flickr, look through any highschool artsy flickr and you will find the same…. bathroom photos, cornfields, ripped tights, naked shots on bed…. LAME

PEOPLE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS NOT THE ARTIST, IT’S HER “CREATIVE” TEAM.

OMG HAS SANDY KIM RIPPED OFF RYAN MCGINLEY??? OMG!!!!!!

  19. nope says:

sandy’s a ryan mcginley clone herself and this article’s image comparison is about as based as janine gordon’s accusation that ryan ripped her off. how is this even a topic for a publication that covers a culture that is more or less dependent on sampling? ps. INSTAGRAM.

i mean… i’ve taken a shower before, i’ve stood in a field of crop before, i’ve laid on a bed in my underwear/nude before, i’ve embraced someone in a market aisle before, i’ve gone to a concert before, i’ve laid/passed out on a floor near a bed before, i’ve been to a fast/cheap food restaurant with a friend before, i’ve ridden on a fixie/bmx bike with a friend before, and i’ve defs driven a car before.

PROPS TO QBELT for bringing this article to my attention but maybe these are just common moments/images of life and nobody is ripping anyone off? the difference between me and sandy or bryan derballa is that i didn’t capture all of these moments in an artful photographic way. love sandy kim’s shit and never seen rihanna’s vid because it’s not my thang, but i feel like this is nothing worth really pointing the (middle) finger over.

OH SHIT, AFTER READING OVER A FEW OF THE COMMENTS ALREADY POSTED I REALIZE PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE IS SAYING THE SAME THING. FUCK ALL DIS, FUCK ALL YALL.

  24. Laura says:

Rihanna did it better…..Riri is the best…get ova it she didnt steal shit she didnt even direct the vid

  25. Brenford says:

Rianna’s video director Melina Matsoukas, is NOTORIOUS for ripping people’s ideas regularly. She’s blatantly ripped off MIA, David Lachapelle, Sølve Sundsbø, Jamil GS, and probably more. Many directors are inspired by other sources, but Matsoukas takes it to a whole nother level. She can’t seem to come up with an original idea by her own self. The fact that she keeps getting work is the real crime.

  27. miles says:

it’s a place in time, a lifestyle commercialized, and not one documentarian can be directly credited for being the originator of the idea. because she’s just living her life and sharing it. there are girls and boys out there doing very similar things everyday. some of them know how to use a camera, some of them know how to use the internet as well.

  28. Bruce says:

u really think rihanna sits down and does anything other than look like a hot slut. of course its a rip off. its ripped off cause its a good idea and no one will care and if someone notices it she already has a new single so whatever.

  29. shawniie says:

hell yea rihanna stole sandy kims ideas but iit doesnt even matter cause she made her video look better and dope wiitth sexxii ass calvin harris iin iit WORRDD

Really? A guy in a bathroom? A girl lying in a bed? a person in a supermarket? People sitting in a car or on a bike? Aren’t these things that every person on this earth does basically every single day of their life? Plus, apart from these very general subjects, 99% of the images don’t even look alike when it comes to composition, light, etc. I’m not sure though if the photographer came with these accusations herself or if someone else did, but if she wants to press charges she will hopelessly fail. And no, I am not a fan of Rihanna, but I am a photographer and I know that you cannot ‘own’ anything as general such as a picture of a cafetaria. Within these kinds of situations a judge really needs to see 100% similarities, and not just the fact that the tiles in the two bathrooms are both white. You get these rules explained to you very clearly in lessons on copyright at every artschool there is, and I’m sure this photographer also knows this very well. If she started this herself (which I’m not sure about) she must only try this to have her name mentioned. Plus what is also important; the pictures above are not meant as a series or in this particular selection and sequence by the photographer: They are spread through her website and found in different projects and series. Therefore, the slight coincidences in these general subjects are only there when you pull apart all of her photoseries and put them back together in a very different way.

Have you ever heard of a very famous photographer called Nan Goldin? She has been taking pictures in a snapshot way of naked people, transgender people and kissing couples sitting in bathtubs and bedrooms since the early 70′s. And I see much more similarities between these two photographers than with Rihanna’s video. According to these standards in this article above, Sandy Kim should be worried about this fact herself then as well. If you want to see real copying by pop artists, you should look at the Beyonce video ‘Countdown’, and compare it to the one of the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker.

  32. Danny says:

Yeah…. I think I have iPhone photos that I could map out and match to a photo with a shitty apt, outside concert and random hipster art shit. Seriously. If she was gonna steal something, she would have stolen something good. You should have found a random photo the guy had of a heart and then made the claim she ripped off the lyric “love” from him too. Good grief. People like to feel special I guess.
