Drake Sued Over “Marvin’s Room” by Alleged Ex

February 03, 2012

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Drake’s supposed ex-girlfriend Ericka Lee is suing him for not sharing co-writing royalties on his 2011 single "Marvin's Room." In a lawsuit filed yesterday in California federal court, Lee claims the voice heard over the phone saying Are you drunk right now? on "Marvin's Room" is hers, and that she and Drake dated and traded lyrics for more than a year. She says Drake initially agreed to collaborate on "Marvin's Room" and split its profits, and that he sent her texts acknowledging her contributions to the completed track—"U basically made that song"—before their relationship went sour at summer's end.

Lee first filed a complaint against Drake last July. She hired a lawyer in November and claims that after doing so, Drake offered her a small percentage of the song's publishing royalties and a $50,000 payout. Lee's current suit seeks additional rewards and demands a judge declare her the track's co-writer.

Update, 2/5/2012: On Saturday, a spokesperson for Drake told Rolling Stone that Lee's lawsuit, "is entirely without merit." The rep said Lee,

consented to the use of her voice in the song 'Marvin’s Room' prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as 'Syren Lyric Muse,' and she did not ask for any compensation. It was only after she retained a lawyer that there was a demand for payment.  Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court.
