Jay-Z and Kanye West Reach Settlement with Syl Johnson

March 12, 2012

Last summer, we reported that Jay-Z and Kanye West were being sued for their use of an illegal sample of soul singer Syl Johnson’s song "Different Strokes." His vocals appear on West's "The Joy," which was originally released in 2010 during his GOOD Friday free music program. The song ultimately appeared on the deluxe edition of Watch the Throne, leading Johnson to seek legal action. Over the weekend, TMZ reported that the three have reached an agreement, citing that "in legal docs filed in Illinois federal court this week, the lawsuit was dismissed because the two sides reached a settlement...though no further details were made available."
