Mykki Blanco gets attention for the pretty dresses and chic wigs she wears in drag, but people too often miss the point or get distracted because she's also doing some weird-ass, innovative things to rap. The Blanco project is not just about beauty and "Join My Militia" is perhaps the greatest testament to that. Produced by Arca, "Join My Militia" joins "Beez in the Trap" in what's becoming the relevant sound of 2012: primitive, sexy, minimal, percussive, fucked up and terrifying. Now she's got a video to match, directed by Mitch Moore with flashlights in the woods and octopuses in Blanco's mouth. Perhaps a reference to a fetish popular in Japan for women rubbing squid on their naked bodies? Her makeup is smeared, her outfits in tatters, and even with nothing left but her nakedness and a cigarette, she's still a great fucking rapper. Pre-order his new EP Mykki Blanco & The Mutant Angels, out tomorrow.
