Das Racist has broken up, Himanshu Suri aka Heems announced onstage this weekend at Munich’s On3 Festival, where the trio were schedule to perform. Appearing solo on behalf of the group, Heems asked onstage, “You guys wanna know the secret? Alright, so I’m going to do some Das Racist songs, but Das Racist is breaking up and we’re not a band anymore.” Victor Vazquez aka Kool A.D. confirmed the split shortly after. “For the record I quit Das Racist two months ago and was asked by our manager not to announce it yet. Apparently @himanshu wanted to do it tho,” he wrote on Twitter. This morning the group’s third member Ashok Kondabolu aka Dapwell told Spin the group had been planning to disband for months. “We had a plan to break up around May. We had just signed this record deal and we were going to put out one proper album and then go on a farewell tour, release a proper breaking up statement that could have been really funny, maybe a weird, stupid video. Now, all of that has gone to shit,” he said. “We kinda checked out and it was just about money, which some people can do, but apparently, we’re not good at doing things we don’t want to do anymore. It made everyone go crazy and get angry in such typical band fashion: guys arguing and then drinking,” Dap explained. “In the beginning, it was just us. We’d all hang out all the time, we all lived in this apartment together. Not that we were super friends, but sort of, you know? Really, it’s a huge opportunity squandered.”

Wow I think that article got really blown out of proportion. People just jump back out of DRs ass over that please. Sounded like a drunk girl behaving like a groupie got advanced on, turned them down, and then stuck around to get hit on repeatedly. No one got raped. And Heems was barely mentioned in that whole thing so why target your comment towards him?
An adult human in postpostpost feminist 2012 actually typing out the words “a drunk girl behaving like a groupie” is problematic for me but his use of the phrase “mother lover” is actually more terrible.
And nothing of value was lost.

Responding to other people’s comments in these threads is so arbitrary but I’m going to do it anyway. I’ve read so many of these articles re: the DR breakup that contain scathing, dismissive comments about Das Racist’s music catalog. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; however, the fact of the matter is that DR has made brilliant music. Just because they operate outside of the “norms” of rap music (these so-called norms being a ridiculous notion in themselves) people have dismissed them as a joke. I have been to quite a few DR shows, and can understand how people were put off by their early performances. All of the hype and bullshit and internet rolling aside, the group has done so much for rap music. They really were at the forefront of a new style of rap in NY that was purist in its foundations but innovative and new in its message. They were one of the most original voices to come out in years, and watching their creative flare flourish over these past few years has been a pleasure for me personally.
If you don’t like DR, that’s fine with me. But my position is that they were a great rap group and hopefully they can come back together to release some new material at some point in the future.
Yo to be real man Hip Hop needs these dudes. Kool AD is that dude….heems got bars too.
