Blessed with a creative mind and a great ear for ecstatic party music, Smiso Zwane is the Johannesburg-based artist who makes music as OkMalumKoolKat. When we we spoke over Skype last month, OkMalumKoolKat told me about growing up in coastal Durban, juggling his various side projects and melding contemporary beats with traditional tones. Here, in the latest micro-documentary for our ongoing Obey You Collective: South Africa series, he opens up about messing around with melodies, his mom, his electro-rap duo Dirty Paraffin, and getting fashion inspiration from South African cab drivers. It's all set against gorgeous clips of cool, gritty Johannesburg. Come back tomorrow for a second video about the multi-talented artist as well as a free download of a never-heard OkMalumKoolKat track.
