"My dude, you’re gonna get in that pool of blood,” recalls Jonathan Mannion, the iconic photographer behind shots like DMX’s legendary Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood album cover, where he persuaded the rapper to drench himself in real blood. In his new TED talk, Mannion reveals behind-the-scenes anecdotes from his 20 years of documenting hip-hop history. His voice cracks and his eyes well with tears as he recalls Aaliyah 's haunting hand-written note on his polaroids, and later he sparkles with admiration as he describes Drake’s tender interaction with his grandmother in Toronto when Mannion photographed him for The FADER.
