Juan Wauters Roams Queens in the “Goo” Video

In his new video, The Beets’ co-founder wears camp and hangs with some NYC eccentrics.

Juan Wauters is the singer/songwriter who co-founded The Beets and also releases solo music under his own name—mostly folksy acoustic pop songs that have the loose-screw appeal of Daniel Johnston or like, The Shaggs. In the video for "Goo," a track off his North American Poetry LP, Wauters wanders around his native Queens dressed like he just raided an Army Surplus store. He hangs with some local eccentrics, walks the wrong way on an escalator and makes a half-assed attempt at lip-syncing. The phone number hovering on the bottom of the screen legitimately leads to a voice mailbox for "Make it or Break it Videos," the straight-to-VHS hip-hop video show that the clip functions as an homage to. North American Poetry is out now via Captured Tracks.
