Please Watch Lil B's "No Black Person Is Ugly"

At the top of this week, I walked into work and played Lil B's hour-long NYU lecture in my headphones while answering emails, as I've often done since sitting in that storied hall and hearing the Based Scripture in person two years ago. Among the gems dropped that day was Lil B's succinct view on race: "Just take two seconds instead of generalizing, because, I promise you, I looked up what 'black' means online, and black means something like coal, you feel me?" Today, Lil B is still reckoning with his thoughts on race and identity: on "No Black Person Is Ugly," off his upcoming Ultimate Bitch mixtape, he slams police brutality, beauty standards found on magazine covers (other than ours), and the knot-in-stomach self-loathing that he sees as an intentional media construct: I see it every day, they got shows like "Jailbreak" but won't help you get straight, he reflects. It's been harder to find these kind of messages in a genre where it was once second-nature, but B manages to inspire without coming off preachy. My English not perfect, I'm not the best in school, he concedes, but that may be why he's most fit to deliver the messages we all need to hear. Watch above and read along courtesy of Duncan Cooper, who's put his quick fingers to use documenting Brandon's good word once again.

No black person is ugly

No black person is ugly

No black person is ugly

No black person is ugly

Make another dime a day, try to make it rhyme away

Sometime my skin is the reason I'm alive today

Bigger than just the race, no card, just the race

No smile, fix your face, we all livin in this place

Trying to make peace with the police

I'm not on probation so why you out asking me?

This is not just about black. I wonder 'bout black.

Can we talk about that? You wonder why I talk back

My English not perfect, I'm not the best at school

But understand I love life's rules

Homeless people they even give me money

I'm too real for the game, reflection of the fame

I got cash, I hide all the pain

They scaring black people, they won't say a thing

That drama is a shame

They want to kill you before they even know your name

Sunshine, sunshine, looking for the sunshine

No black person is ugly, don't say it one time

No black person is ugly, don't say it one time

Sunshine, sunshine, for the sunshine

No black person is ugly, don't say it one time

No black person is ugly, don't say it one time

I'm sort like a Panther, I'm silent like the underground

Dealing with the trials of life. How did we get here today?

Black beauty not showed in the media

I was told that you got a afro, or you got a big nose

That your lips are too big, you talking low

My people understand so why you don't know?

It's just communication, if we all sat down and got past the revelations

The future of the people, advancement, trying to take chances

The media, propaganda—it slanders the black beauty

I'm not stupid, I see it every day

They got shows like Jailbreak but won't help you get straight

I'm trying to see black on more magazines

Own the streets, the hoods that they claiming

Never been racist or understand if you want to try to change places

I seen the other side, I know that's amazing, life is amazing

They want you to work to enslave you

They try to trick you to think they made you

We all got a voice, stand up against violence if it's close to your home

Stand up against rape, no means no

Clean up the streets, you feel me?

And stop that beef

Hands up for peace on the streets

Sunshine, sunshine, looking for the sunshine

No black person is ugly, don't say it one time

No black person is ugly, don't say it one time
