FADER Mix: Chromatic Sound

Chromatic Sound is a five-strong dancehall crew from Kingston, Jamaica that knows how to raise the roof. Creep Chromatic, who moonlights as former FADER cover star Popcaan's DJ, co-founded Chromatic Sound with MC Niko Chromatic, and completing the line-up are JR Chromatic, also an MC, and DJs Shantonio Chromatic and Heavy D, who contribute mix engineering and remix-making skills, respectively.

The Chromatic crew have linked with Popcaan many times over the years—most notably for a 2012 mixtape that was instrumental in the latter's rise—and this brand new FADER Mix builds on that relationship, while also tipping a hat to still-incarcerated dancehall legend Vybz Kartel and Popcaan's No.1 fan, Mr OVO himself. Where are you right now? Please describe your surroundings. I'm alone in the studio. It's 3:18AM now, and I just took a break from working on this mixtape, because my manager Carleene called and reminded me that FADER needs the answers submitted asap.

Tell us a bit about your mix—what do you imagine people doing while listening to it? It's the third installment of our traditional Popcaan x Chromatic collaborative effort. It's called "Fixtings Fixtape." I imagine listeners to be entertained full-circle, by everything from lyrics of all topics to fun-filled skits, jokes, and new slangs. It will definitely be another timeless mixtape, like the last two.

What do you like about working with Popcaan? To me, Popcaan is just a natural. Everything about him being an entertainer is just too easy for him—he's entertaining when he's doing nothing. When we decide to combine ideas and make a mixtape with remixes, freestyles, and skits on a few of our favorite new and old school beats, it's a blessing.

What's the craziest thing that's happened to you on tour? Between Chromatic touring and touring with Popcaan, I've definitely been through my fair share of crazy: plane trouble, hotel trouble, altercations, groupies. I think one of the most memorable nights was playing the OVOfest afterparty with Drake and Popcaan.

What are your on-the-road must-have creature comforts? I need everything I pack and travel with: my laptop, cellphones, clothes, caps, shoes, toothbrush, deodorant, cologne—all dat.

And finally, what's your favorite dish to cook and how do you make it? My favorite pizza to order is a medium Supreme, no mushrooms :)
