O.T. Genasis Softens Up On “Do It”

The rapper recruits Lil Wayne to help him out.

O.T. Genasis' "Coco" was an outlier compared to most of the out-of-the-blue rap hits last year. Songs like Dej Loaf's "Try Me," Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan's "Lifestyle," and iLoveMakonnen's "Tuesday" tended towards the melodic end of the spectrum. In contrast, Genasis' delivery was gruff, lumbering, and shouty, matching a stern, gothic beat.

You may be surprised, then, to hear his latest single, "Do It," featuring Lil Wayne. (Wayne rapped over the "Coco" beat on his recent mixtape, Sorry 4 The Wait 2.) The new instrumental is positively sunny compared to "Coco," with twinkling piano and a cooing vocal. Genasis is suddenly transformed into a speedy, nimble MC, and he tries his hand at the mixture of singing and rapping that's become so common on rap radio. Listen below.
