Hudson Mohawke Covered John Carpenter’s “Escape From New York”

For LuckyMe.

December 29, 2015

John Carpenter's soundtrack for his 1981 movie Escape From New York—in which all of Manhattan has become one big prison, and Kurt Russell has to rescue the President—was a crucial early document of the power and flexibility of the synthesizer. Hudson Mohawke recently paid tribute to the film's main theme for the LuckyMe Advent Calendar, which offers a free download every day from December 27 to January 6. Mohawke sticks pretty closely to the original, even tuning his synths so that they sound properly old-fashioned. But he can't help thickening some parts and adding pounding drums: this is a producer who like to flex his muscles.
