It marks the first time his children and ex-wife have been attached to a film project.

A new documentary about the life of Marvin Gaye is being developed and for the first time the late singer's family has given their blessing to the producers. What's Going On will cover the creation of the singer's classic album of the same name, according to a report from Variety. Gaye's children Nona, Frankie, and Marvin III Gaye all supported and/or contributed along with his ex-wife Janis. The film will be released in 2017 and aims to be “the defining portrait of this visionary artist and his impeccable album,” according to its producers. It will be filmed on location in Detroit, Washington, and Los Angeles and also feature never-before-seen film of the iconic singer.
