On Sunday night, Lorde will compete against Childish Gambino, JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Bruno Mars for the Album of the Year award. The male nominees from the category, as is customary, were invited to perform songs from their albums, but, according to a report from Variety, Lorde was not extended the same invitation.

According to Variety, Lorde was instead invited to be a part of a group tribute to Tom Petty, which included the song "American Girl." Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and Bruno Mars are scheduled to perform at the awards show, but all four men in the category were reportedly asked to perform.

As Vulture points out, Lorde's mother, Sonja Yelich, tweeted a screenshot from a New York Times article on Friday. "Of the 899 people to be nominated for Grammy awards in the past six years, only nine per cent were women,” the portion of the article read. "This says it all," Yelich added.
