H.E.R. performs new, unreleased song at the 2019 VMAs

The enigmatic singer debuted a new song Monday evening.

Donning her signature sunglasses, R&B and soul singer H.E.R. took to the VMAs stage Monday evening with a soulful performance of a new, unreleased song [Update: It's called "Anti"]. Joined by a back-up singers on stage, she sang about not conforming to society's expectations of her: "That's why I'm anti, that's why I say to myself that I'm anti this, anti that."

This performance marks the singer's debut on the VMAs stage as she's in the running for three awards tonight: Best New Artist, Push Artist Of The Year, and Best R&B with "Could've Been," her 2018 collaboration with Bryson Tiller.

The 2019 VMAs are being held Monday evening at New Jersey's Prudential Center. Hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalo, the 36th annual award show has Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift leading the way with 10 nominations each, and Missy Elliott receiving the esteemed Video Vanguard Award.
