17 years ago, Missy Elliott bridged hip hop history and the golden age of Disney Channel by recruiting Alyson Stoner (of Mike's Super Short Show fame) to dance in her iconic "Gossip Folks" video. The clip was famously referenced on an episode of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody — I would normally link out to a YouTube clip of that here, but you just had to be there.

Anyway, Missy Elliott was honored as the recipient of the VMA Vanguard Award at tonight's annual show, and with it she brought a medley of hits. Though Elliott didn't perform "Gossip Folks," she did make sure to bring out Ms. Stoner herself for a brilliantly executed callback to those days way back when. Check it out for yourself below, near the 3:25 mark.

Hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalo, the 36th annual award show has Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift leading the way with 10 nominations each, and Missy Elliott receiving the esteemed Video Vanguard Award.
