On an already stacked New Music Friday, Hook is throwing her hat in the ring with a new, Surf Gang-produced “EP” titled Selfish. More accurately, the Riverside, California rapper’s new release is a double A-side single, featuring two equally exciting tracks with beats by the New York avant-drill crew’s two best producers: Evilgiane and Harrison.

The project is a slick synthesis, highlighting Hook’s bizarro energy in the way Surf Gang does best. Giane gets an assist from yen5k on the 8-bit-inspired “Freewaves” beat, forming the foundation for Hook to throw some lighthearted jabs at her opponents. When the song shifts tempo halfway through, her repetitive vocals descend into delightfully jarring lyrical minimalism in the vein as Playboi Carti’s early work. Harrison’s “Last Visit” beat is a bit more straightforward — twinkly synth keys over blown-out 808s — giving Hook’s bars a sharper feel. The latter track comes with a music video (also by Harrison), shot out of focus on a moonlit beach. Watch the clip and listen to both new songs below.
