Contest: Win Tickets to See Theophilus London, BLK JKs & Wild Yaks

Talk about an inspired lineup! Deep breath: FADER 52 cover stars BLK JKS, FADER 61 feature Theophilus London and FADER 57 Gen Fers Wild Yaks are all uniting under one roof this Saturday September 12th at the FADER 60 featured Santos Party House to play us awesome jams. We also heard a rumor (made it up) that the drinks page from the magazine will also come alive if you hand the bartender some money (wokka wokka). It’s as if the pages of our magazine are coming to life. Just like magic. It would be ridiculous to miss this, so get your (super cheap) tickets here, or tell us why you want to go and who you’re most excited to see in the comments and win a couple tickets. As always, don’t forget to leave an actual email address so we can let you know you won.

Freeload: BLK JKS, “Molalatladi” MP3

Since putting them on the cover of FADER #52, we have seen BLK JKS perform “Molalatladi” about 50 times, and every single time they manage to get the crowd chanting along whether they ask for it or not. These are some jaded New Yorkers we’re talking about, so you know they must be doing something right. BLK JKS recently signed to Secretly Canadian and will put out their debut album After Robots on September 8th and continue to jam out shows all over the place, including an upcoming date in Brooklyn on July 5th with fellow FADER cover star Cody Chesnutt, who somehow has still managed to not put out the greatest rock album in history despite our wishes.

The Let Out: BLK JKS + Catchdubs

This week on The Let Out, our weekly East Village Radio show (made possible by Dewars), we’ve got a jam packed show featuring our dude Nick Catchdubs and FADER 52 cover stars BLK JKS. Listen live to The Let Out at eastvillageradio.com from 6-8 EST.

Freeload: BLK JKS Sign to Secretly Canadian, Issue Free EP

FADER Number 52 coverstars, South African shredders and erstwhile New Yorkers BLK JKS have just signed with one of our favorite labels, Secretly Canadian. And to commemorate the event, Other Music is offering the debut EP as a free download for a limited time, while Digforfire.tv hosts a three-part documentary on the band’s recent stay in NYC. We couldn’t be happier to see these guys get their due and hopefully the exposure that will come with it. Not to mention, more hangtime in the US! Pick up the EP through the link below and buy it when it comes out next March 10th.

Freeload: BLK JKS, “Summertime” (Carlos Ramos Remix)

It seems like a million months ago that we were seeing BLK JKS on like every corner of every city in the United States, but really it was just a couple and it felt like a lot more time because we got so used to seeing them perform everywhere we turned. Since we still break out their 10″ on the regular, we were amped to see that they had a new EP for download, and even more amped to stream “Summertime,” and then download this Carlos Ramos remix, which reduces the song to a single rubbery stand up bass line and minimal drum tick. We talk a lot about how New York summers on this site, but this song is the essence of them—the good and the impossibly humid bad—captured in about four minutes. Also, check out a live rendition of “Summertime” from one of BLK JKS’ last US shows at Harriet’s Alter Ego up above.

FADER/Southern Comfort 7″ Series #6: BLK JKS & Esau Mwamwaya

The 6th edition of the highly-coveted, always banging FADER/Southern Comfort 7″ Series is now in the office, and maybe it’s the smog, but we are tripping heavily on both the cover and songs within. For this one we got our dudes BLK JKS to tear up “Umbzabalazo”, given the Super Freq mix by Greg Mann, and Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit sent us a snazzy version of the epic “Chilombo.” Not to be outdone, quiltmaker extraordinaire Ian Hundley sent us a gigantic pattern which we then shrunk to fit.

All of this can be yours for the mere price of nothing by emailing contests@thefader.com with “quilts” in the subject line.

FADER TV: Open Bar With BLK JKS

Video by Joe Angerone

Trust us, when we put Johannesburg’s BLK JKS on the cover of our Africa Issue, we had no idea we’d be seeing them more frequently than our parents this year. From New York to Texas and back to New York, the dudes have been grinding hard and meeting half of America in the meantime. We managed to wrangle them for an episode of Open Bar, our new series filmed at
Heathers in the East Village. They jammed out an acoustic version of “Molalatladi” and then disappeared to do something presumably cool because that’s all they do. Tomorrow night though, 11:30 at Joe’s Pub, they will be playing their last show before heading back home, so come out and say goodbye (for now) and prep for the release of their new Mystery EP recorded at Electric Ladyland while you were sleeping.

NYC: Get Weird With BLK JKS

New York Cityers Who Think You Are Cool, you now have another chance to witness the raw jazz-jam-metal-ska power of South Africa’s BLK JKS as they return to the Big Apple for former FADER editor-in-chief Alex Wagner’s Get Weird music series at the New Museum. BLK JKS totally shredded the FADER Fort last Saturday and the FADER 52 party (video), but we are super excited to see them again sans Sparks jitters (us not them) before they head back home. Tickets are only 8 bucks and that gets you free admission to the galleries as well. AAANNNDD the band will field questions from the audience at some point, so hopefully no one will steal our question: What does Pharrell smell like?

The Future Is Happening Now…BLK JKS Meets Pharrell at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort

It took some doing but we finagled this photo with FADER 52 coverstars BLK JKS, playing at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort on Saturday, and Pharrell backstage last night after N.E.R.D.’s performance. And we made sure to yell “BLK JKS BLK JKS BLK JKS” at Pharrell and Chad as many times as possible in hopes that they will collaborate and make crazy rock.
