Freeload: Daytona f. Bun B, “Air Born” MP3
- story THE FADER
It seems to have gone relatively unnoticed that Daytona is making some of the best blunted-in-the-stairwell raps with ominous low-key beats and NY-grit since people actually did that on a regular basis. In fact, he might be the only guy doing that these days.

Contest: Bun B + Mike Jones at The Mezzanine SF
- story THE FADER
Memorial Day weekend is pretty much here so we thought for a second about skipping town and heading to San Francisco to catch Bun B and Mike Jones at the Mezzanine this Saturday. It turns out that plane tickets are kind of expensive during long weekends though, who would have thought? So instead, we’ll just recommend that you hit us at contests@thefader.com with your full name and Memorial Day in the subject line for your chance to win the pleasure of seeing Bun completely tear a stage down. And Mike Jones say his name still. As always, full flyer comes after the jump.

Same as before, only now Bun B’s on here referencing swine flu, meaning he recorded his verse somewhere between last week and five minutes ago.

FADER TV: Bun B, “Let Me See It” (Live at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort)
- story THE FADER
There are pros and there are bros and there certain individuals who are both. Bun B wasn’t even scheduled to perform at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort on Saturday—he was just hanging out in the VIP doing interviews and enjoying his birthday. But when Rick Ross was a no show, Bun came through and delivered a performance of solo and UGK classics that got the crowd going like few other artists did the whole week. We, in gratitude, delivered a big yellow birthday cake. Happy Birthday, Bun! Thanks for everything. Watch Bun receive birthday wishes from his fans and perform UGK’s “Let Me See It” live from The Fort.

FADER TV: Where in the World Is… Bun B
- story THE FADER
Little known fact: the FADER conference room is actually the world’s first and only luxury teleportation device. It can transport up to 37 people across the farthest reaches of space and time, with full wet bar service and wi-fi. And it goes everywhere, whether the deepest ocean blue or the remotest of faraway hinterlands, at any point in history you so choose. So when the venerable Bun B came through our office the other day to play us the spectacular yet final UGK album (RIP Pimp C), we decided to be hospitable and offer Bun a free ride to the heart of the Astrodome, in his home turf of Houston. Bun was so satisfied with our little crack time-traveling operation he was compelled to do an exclusive freestyle. After he was through, we had a comfortable ride back to the safety of our block in Chelsea, sure as little chocolate Charlie balled around town in the VIP of the Glass Elevator. Take that, Swedes!
Freeload: Young Chris f. Wale & Bun B, “Searching”
- story THE FADER
It’s safe to say that we’ve been waiting on a Young Chris solo album pretty much since
this. Though some 8 years later, Chris’ impending Now Or Never seems like it’s finally going to see the light of day. Seemingly as a reward for our patience, Young C is giving us (not really, but someone) a chance to BE ON THE ALBUM. The song already has Wale and Bun B on it so the wack need not apply, but according to Chris, anyone can “rap, sing or even talk about what they are searching for.” You can download the song, complete with a space for contribution below. Verses, ceremonial chants, etc can be turned in at youngchris.com or searchingforanoutlet.com.

Freeload: Trae f. Bun B + Lil Keke, “Grey Cassette”
- story THE FADER
When the trailer for Trae’s upcoming animated series materialized yesterday, we had a long office talk about bad ideas. What didn’t come up in our discussion, though, was “Grey Cassette”, a DJ Screw tribute track from Trae’s upcoming Streets Advocate mixtape featuring Bun B and Lil Keke. Between the cartoon, this song, punching Mike Jones and having an entire day dedicated to him, it’s hard to believe that only two years ago we were trumpeting Trae as a relatively unknown talent.

Freeload: E-40, Gucci Mane & Bun B, “The Recipe”
- story THE FADER
At this point, we feel like we’ve had more lessons in cooking and selling crack than high school math. So besides the fact that following any of those lessons would pretty much be the worst idea in the world, it also results in a lot of really repetitive songs glorifying something awful. That said, the reason we like “The Recipe” is because it is a tired concept done well, and is a another chance for E-40 to embark on another super-serious reality rap adventure over a beat that sounds like golden age 3-6 Mafia.

Hyphy and Houston may not exactly be on the tips of tongues right now, but we continue to stay vigilant, for even in the dryest times the jams continue to trickle. The most recent of these is FAB’s new song with three of Houston’s most well-known. And though Paul indeed says some shit about his “Jolly Rancher paint” this still sounds pretty fresh.

We can’t say we ever expected to type the name Chino XL into a post on this site, but we have been known to exceed our own expectations on occasion. Chino, along with Killer Mike and Shreveport’s Bulletproof (aka Teflon) join Bun on this II Trill bonus cut making the blog circuits, creating a pretty formidable Southern axis from coast to coast. It does definitely sound like a bonus though because there’s no way it’s as good as anything on the album, which if you don’t bother to check release dates anymore, came out yesterday and is loaded. And just for fun, here’s a video of Bun talking to us about the album and Barack Obama.
