Dirty Money f. Drake, “Hurt (Loving You No More)” MP3
- story Peter Macia
Listen, we didn’t title our Drake cover story “Drake’s Rise to Fame and Fortune” because he’s our cousin. We’re sure in the time leading up to his debut album, Drizzy will bless many a major song with stellar guest verses, but this one is particularly good, even if it’s on a song where Diddy uses Auto-Tune to sound like T-Pain if he was really depressed and on a ton of Xanax. Like dude, cheer up, let someone else sing and Drake go bananas—it’s still money in your pocket.

If Diddy Doesn’t Let a Tranny Named Jaila Win Making His Band, DFA Should Sign Her
- story Matthew Schnipper
Watching MTV’s Making His Band has been a not always fruitful experience. Lazy drummers, unskilled bassists and flat vocalists have sheepishly paraded past exasperated judges who have given them ample opportunity to hone their chops and prove their worth (and who also make records on Hyperdub). Though there have been some diamond moments, they weren’t particularly sparkling, just bright by comparison because they’re surrounded by dirt. But last night’s episode finally saw some star shine, with Jaila Simms housing the competition.
The groups were split up with a focus on the vocalists, each team performing a rollerskate boogie number—Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and Evelyn Champagne King’s “I’m In Love.” The first two limped along, skilled enough but unenthused, but “I’m in Love,” led up by Simms, a transsexual woman with a very short dress, destroyed. She got tiger-like, and a little frightening, devouring the track with a guttural yet sultry I’m in lu-uhve. On the same day we heard that Nomi did not perform with modern disco torch bearers Hercules and Love Affair, we’re hoping that maybe someone misses Simms’ magic and lets her slide indie, where maybe she belongs. If not, hopefully she can help out that sippin’ on Ciroc and Red Bull track Diddy was struggling through earlier in the episode, because that was rough. Check the episode in the above video or skip right to the “I’m in Love” performance at 29:50. Simms fans herself during the intro.
Update: The embedded video of the show is not working, but it’s viewable directly on MTV’s site.
Video: Red Cafe, “Hottest In The Hood”
- story Felipe Delerme
This is a different look for Diddy, hanging out in front of cheap motels and all. Fab too, probably. Is that what took so long for the video to come out? Was there some kind of “Hate Me Now” crucifixion scene condemnation, Diddy demanding last minute re-edits, only to realize popping champagne with Red Cafe wouldn’t be quite as easy as it was with Steve Stoute? That’s not how it works with the “Hottest In The Hood.” But also, we could’ve sworn we were getting a Fab verse out of this.

Everyone on this song has made individual songs that we’ve jammed, all probably in the last week alone, or maybe we’re just overlooking our undying allegiance to DJ Enuff’s “Rush Hour,” but holy shit, Loso is on fire right now.

Audio: Jay-Z and Diddy Call Hot 97 From the Inauguration
- story THE FADER
This is one of the better things we’ve heard from the last two days: Jay and “Puff Daddy” giddy as schoolboys, rightfully so, after being on the platform for Obama’s inauguration. Choice moment:
Angie: “You still feel like this guy’s a little cooler than you?”
Jay-Z: “Nah, he’s absolutely right there. It’s scary.”

Bonus: After the jump, watch Kanye’s performance at MTV’s Youth Ball. Check, as he puts it, The Bullet (black mullet). Intense.
Video: Diddy Records His Own Version of “Swagger Like Us” And Videotapes Himself Listening To It While Eating Fruitloops And Doing That One Dance He Does
- story THE FADER
Can you imagine what it must be like to be Diddy? You can buy stores and get a show on MTV that basically amounts to making a television channel pick someone to work for you. You can have a rap career without being a rapper, and you can put a video out that, over the course of four minutes, not only convinces us that we wouldn’t be against “Swagger Like Us” having a Puff verse, but is also really entertaining. Then you can put it on the internet yesterday and already have over 66,000 views.
