E-40 f. Young Jeezy & B-Legit, “Get Money”

Revenue Retrievin’? Can we go ahead and give E-40 that award for best career album titles? Now we’ve made no secret of our 40 Water stannery in the past, but this kind of consistency needs to be acknowledged. And also, the man changed the English language! For the better or the worse is debatable, but what isn’t is his ability to run with both O.G.’s, like B-Legit, as well as Young Jeezys, and make it all cohesive, even over a strangely Miami circa 2007 beat.

Q+A: E-40 Continues to Be Flamboyant

We grew up with E-40, became “little adults” with E-40, and as far as we can tell, we will stay with E-40 until we are old and craggly and our tatas look like deflated beach balls and our voices sound like James Earl Jones after a 2-pack night of smoking. So just a few weeks before he releases his eleventh proper album, Ball Street Journal (out 11/25), we got up with our life partner and asked him about voting, his new dreads (as seen in the above video), his new album and a whip trick much less dangerous than ghostriding. Interview after the jump.

Video: E-40, “Poor Man’s Hydraulics”

If we drove cars and/or didn’t get motion sickness so easily, “I punch the gas/I hit the brakes” would be our mantra. Luckily E-40 and his band of awesome dancers handled that for us in this video, with E-40 serenading the donk posse in the wispiest, sickest Keak-like flow. This is also the first time since we were in diaper-knickers that we have not been majorly cheesed out by any form of beatboxing, because this is more like some next-level space belching. But that’s why we like E-40: style and substance.

ATL: Sk8tique Boutique Opening with E-40 and Cool Kids

Pro skater and Philadelphia native Stevie Williams is opening up a new flagship store in Atlanta’s Little Five Points tonight with some help from Don Cannon and performances by 40 Water and the Cool Kids. Check the flyer here.

A loooooongg time ago, in FADER Number 5, we put Stevie in the Gen F section of the magazine, but since we don’t have any modern way of accessing the files, we decided to just scan it from the page and put it up. Read it and then try to fill in the ten year gap of Stevie’s bio since we wrote it. And then go party with the Dirty Ghetto Kids and rumored special guests Flo-Rida, Rich Boy, Ludacris and Ne-Yo. Maybe bring some girls with you or something.

At this point, we feel like we’ve had more lessons in cooking and selling crack than high school math. So besides the fact that following any of those lessons would pretty much be the worst idea in the world, it also results in a lot of really repetitive songs glorifying something awful. That said, the reason we like “The Recipe” is because it is a tired concept done well, and is a another chance for E-40 to embark on another super-serious reality rap adventure over a beat that sounds like golden age 3-6 Mafia.

Video: E-40 f. Turf Talk, “Got Rich Twice”

Although E-40 has a catalog chockful of hits, it seems like “Got Rich Twice” signifies his realization that mega hit lightning might only strike once, and it’s pointless to try and imitate it. “Got Rich Twice” is pretty much the exact opposite of “Tell Me When to Go,” replacing sleigh bells with scary Halloween noises and mechanical ghost howls. We almost made a ghostriding the whip joke, but instead we dug up this old interview with 40 Water, done right before the release of My Ghetto Report Card, and put “Got Rich Twice” on repeat.

Freeload: E-40 f. Lil Jon, “Turf Drop”

Remember the last time 40 and Jon made a record together? Oh of course you do because it was everywhere and made your 6-year-old cousin jump out of the station wagon on the way to school that one day and break his leg. So anyway, dudes are back and it sounds familiar, yes, but 40’s familiar is fucking awesome so just deal with it. Also, they have a Myspace page just for this song, which is funny, and you can upload your “turf drop” youtubes on it in hopes of getting a spot in the official video, which is also funny. We were also noticing how Yay Area dance videos look just like old skate videos and that’s pretty cool, so if someone could upload one that looks like Search for Animal Chin we will give you high fives.

Just when you think a crazily underrated song is gone and forgotten, Jeezy and 40 Water jump on a remix and make you feel like anything is possible. We’re going to go build a balloon!

Wicked Flashback

Yesterday’s pic of E-40 lamping with the new FADER sent us back into the vaults where we found this classy classic of Ice-T in Las Vegas.

Peep the nail polish. Way pimpish.
