Video: Kevin Drew’s The Water
- story THE FADER
In FADER 59 we talked to Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew about his short film The Water, based around the Feist song of the same name. “I’m very much a fan of watching people walk around in a room or walk through the trees for five minutes,” he said, which is essentially what takes up most of the time in The Water—Cilian Murphy, David Fox and Leslie Feist in the snow, by the fire, returning to and from the dead of the forest in almost complete silence. Watch the whole film—originally conceived as a music video for the song, which plays during the second half—as it is finally available for wider viewing.
Video: Feist, “Honey Honey”
- story THE FADER
At some point earlier this year, there was talk in the office of doing an all-puppet issue, but it got scrapped because it turns out not many people want to see our hands in a sock on the cover of The FADER. One of the key figures in that early brainstorming session was Leslie Feist because of her relation to Gonzales and his predilection for puppetry. And now, several months later, she has taken the puppet ball from us and run with it in this new video for “Honey Honey” directed by frequent Arts & Crafts collaborator Anthony Seck. Which all goes to show you, always stick to your guns. Or not. Still probably not the best idea we’ve had.
Live: Feist Is Metallica For White Girls
- story THE FADER
That’s right. Get used to it. We didn’t think there was such a thing either, but when a young lady sitting behind us, wearing a perfectly fine outfit, belched a guttural YESSSS! when Leslie Feist played the first notes of “1, 2, 3, 4″, it became evident that her music has inspired this new class of American music fan. We didn’t see what this girl was doing when she bellowed but we’ll pretend it involved two arms raised high, the fingers on each hand twisted into lowercase f’s. The Hammerstein Ballroom, a pretty massive NYC space, was gorged with girls on the first of Feist’s two nights, and for the first time in a long time, we didn’t have to go to a Hannah Montana concert to witness total, unequivocal feminine jamming. When Feist whispered “Honey Honey”, there was respectful silence. When she shredded (yeah, shredded) “I Feel It All”—total eruption. We couldn’t see from the balcony (dubbed “The Titanic” by Leslie), but there had to have been some epic shoulder rubbing going on down on the floor. People were excited! Trust, there was crazy air-pianoing and almost constant sing-along, but the sea of people was also glassy and cooperative. It was weird. Where else does that happen? Catholic churches?
All we’re saying is that—and this is no revelation—Feist pwns Lite Times. She’s become more popular than we ever would’ve bet, and we’re not totally sure how. It’s kind of the same way Barack Obama has overcome his bad demographics by attracting so many new voters into the mix. Where have all these women been? Why don’t they come to more shows? We’re sick of dudes. They stink and don’t dance. They were at the Feist show not singing along. And you know what, dudeguys, you don’t get to crank our “Mushaboom” music box or wear our Feist t-shirt or put shit in our Feist canvas tote or listen to our Feist vinyl. See Feist this summer all over Europe and North America.
NYC: Stuff Is Going On
- story THE FADER
New Yorkers we have some bad news for you, you’re going to have to make some hard decisions tonight because there are some serious shows happening. First of all there is Feist at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Feist does not currently have a new album out, but everyone in the world has a crush on her so you should go. What Feist does have though, is a duet with the Constantines covering the Bee Gees by way of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ “Islands in the Stream.” You can listen to that here. Alternately, if you want to get a little weird you can hit up Southpaw and catch Gang Gang Dance and High Places, two bands that probably should put out another record but have yet to do so. If that doesn’t float your boat you can catch Santogold at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square for FREE in like an hour and a half. Free! It kinda snuck up on us, but Santi’s new album comes out today and it is jamming. We’ve seen her perform a whole bunch in the last couple months and it is consistently great, everyone should go. ALSO: We mentioned The Verve the other day because their performance at Coachella was pretty stunning and loud, and if you couldn’t make it out to the hot desert in the middle of nowhere you can catch The Verve at The WaMu theater at Madison Square Garden in an area that probably has air conditioning but will still be really hot.

Audio: Feist, “I Feel It All” (Escort Remix)
- story THE FADER
Last summer we saw Feist perform at McCarren Pool right around dusk. She sang a bunch of her songs with a full band, including opener (and Gen Fer) Kevin Drew. It was warm, we were sitting on the ground, we were many beers deep and we didn’t want it to end. This remix by fellow FADER Gen F subjects Escort is the closest we’ve come to that feeling since. So all we need now is a laptop that brews beer.
Audio: Feist, “I Feel It All” (Gonzales Remix)
- story THE FADER
We have been on a huge Gonzales kick lately (also a puppet kick) so when we heard this remix, full of tiny synths and even smaller handclaps we envisioned a little puppet Kraftwerkian orchestra wearing futuristic sunglasses and clapping tiny fingers, their images forever tied to the music of Gonzales, hopefully soon fully realized on a stage that does not exist only in our minds.

Does anyone know if Feist and/or Patrick Daughters smoke the sensi? Please email info@thefader.com if you’ve gotten high with either of them. We won’t narc, promise, it’s just that videos like this and all the others they’ve done together have the stink of stoner brainstorms all over them and we’re not even sure that grass is illegal in California anymore so it wouldn’t be that big of a deal if Les and Pat sat around sharing a doobie and pitching ideas to each other. In fact, we are looking for an invite. We’ll bring the shiraz!

On the really real, Feist went gunning for that number one spot far as any live performances this week are concerned. She brought the tape loops, crazy hot vocalisms, and just plain ill stage presence, aided and abetted by all sorts of actual factual thunderstorms for emphasis – video soon, but for now check more pics from the FADER house after the jump.
