Video: Jay-Z f. Alicia Keys, “Empire State of Mind” (FADER Version)
- story Peter Macia
Apparently the snitches we rely on to pass our ideas to rich and powerful weren’t listening when we pitched our treatment of this video, so here goes. Hype, feel free to redo, so long as we get a cut.
FADER IN: VERSE ONE:
As the first notes of “Empire” ring through the speakers, the camera focuses on the front door of Jay’s old building in Marcy. A few current young residents stand near. As Jay’s verse begins, he emerges from the door and the camera dollies with him. He walks east through Marcy, gathering followers behind him with every step until the first chorus.
Hounds of Hate and Hype Williams Make a Tape
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Hugest bummer ever was when we realized that cassettes had been fully re-embraced not long after we finally decided to get rid of our tape player. After fishing it out of the dumpster (buying a new one) we too were ready for the movement, and just in time. FADER contributor Scott Wright has mp3s of the new Hounds of Hate/Hype Williams (not to be confused with White Williams or the actual Hype Williams) split cassette, in which each artist supplies the music for one side, allowing the other artist to add and subtract as needed. If you’re in the mood for weird synth experiments, snatches of great song ideas and blown-speaker drums then this is the tape (or mp3) for you. British people who still have tape players can buy the thing here. Everyone else can download both sides below. (via Pinglewood)

Video: Swizz Beats, “When I Step In The Club”
- story THE FADER
Long time observers of The FADER should recognize Swizzy as one of the few artists who we’ve written about almost obsessively over the years, often for no reason (new hat, etc) and sometimes to the confusion of our readership. All that said, it’s been a minute since we hit the Swizz key on our keyboards, so when we heard Jadakiss’ “Who’s Real?” on Hot 97 last night, with SB flipping “If You’re Happy And You Know It” into a club anthem, and then saw this new video directed by Hype, we kinda felt like it was time to bring Uncle Beats back to the blog. The video appears to be part of a special project for Hennessy Black, where you can also download the mp3.
Video: Common f. Pharrell, “Universal Mind Control”
- story THE FADER
Common’s new album Universal Mind Control was, according to the man himself, recorded for summertime listening and good times but has since seen its release date pushed from June to September to November 11th. That ain’t summertime and some would argue these aren’t the goodest of times. However, now that we’re actually getting into the ice cold techno of the eponymous first single and Hype’s Minority Report/I, Robot-ish video, we gotta say it might be for the best that this is coming out when the weather traps people in cars and clubs and we’re all gonna have to work like machines to stay in business.
