Live: Stones Throw at One Step Beyond
- story THE FADER
Fridays have come to mean many things in the FADER office (alcohol with breakfast, EVR, staying up past 10pm), but we’ve come to look especially forward to the Friday’s that bring One Step Beyond at the American Museum of Natural History. This past Friday boasted the beloved Stones Throw All-Stars including Dam-Funk, Peanut Butter Wolf, James Pants and Mayer Hawthorne. Having witnessed the mayhem that was the Stones Throw showcase at CMJ, we showed up bright and early to Mayer Hawthorne opening up. Taking the reigns next was Pants, who played plenty of doo-wop, but to the chagrin of one puzzled attendee, did not sing. Dam Funk, on the other hand, did sing, performing songs from his upcoming album, including one dedicated to a former head of state called, “Killdatmutherfucker.” Closing out was Peanut Butter Wolf, who finished with an especially well-rounded set, ranging from hip-hop classics to The Ying Yang Twins, “Wait (The Whisper Song)” transitioning into the Bing Bong Brothers version. We. Couldn’t. Get. Enough.

It seems like only yesterday that we were dubstepping on scales that tell you how much you weigh on other planets while Haley Joel Osment stood near. Lucky for us, this Friday May 8th, we’ll be back in the game for the next installment of One Step Beyond at the Museum of Natural History, this time with Stones Throw dudes Peanut Butter Wolf, James Pants, Mayer Hawthorne and Dam Funk. As always, you’re not going to want to miss it. Get your tickets here and check the full flyer after the jump.

Video/Freeload: James Pants Makes Crazy People Music
- story THE FADER
There are very few, if any, labels as committed to bizarre rap tangents than Stones Throw, but this new dude James Pants is something else. It’s almost like they don’t want to sell any records and yet they do because their oddities are just genius enough to be worth blowing a couple cheeseburgers on. Pants barely makes songs at all, just weird synth journeys that are probably kind of frightening to listen to if you’re not in a stable mindstate. “Cosmic Rapp” (above) is the shyest electro ever, “Ka$h” is like Timberlake if he grew up in an orphanage and this “I Ain’t Trippin” remix makes $hort Dog sound like a grandnana with a broken keyboard.
