Freeload: Charles Hamilton, “Scorpion”

Hey surprise, Charles Hamilton, one of our current covers, has another mixtape coming out — this one inspired by love and Chris Brown. “Scorpion” is the first official leak from Well Isn’t This Awkward, to be released on Valentine’s Day, a tape purportedly having something to do with Masterpiece Theatre and paranormal romance, but if Charles’ blog reveals what it seems to reveal, it might be less para and more normal, as in Rihanna’s got a not-at-all secret admirer:

But f*ck that. It’s my GIRL we talkin about… to quote Ne-Yo, “Ehbahdy knoe dah maahne!!!!”. I was in the studio, FUMING mad. And that’s before the Hennessey kicked in. Rihanna, wherever you are, my prayers are with you, and my skinny, short ass is gon hold you down if need be. Chris, your mother.

February 13th, Rihanna. I will say all that I couldn’t say at that Gucci event… holla back…

Sorry to get gossipy, but it’s not like we get a lot of Teen Beat moments around here. And just in case you’re already clamoring for the mixtape after Awkward, Charles is recording the Flourescent EP with MC Lyte right now.

We were all pumped cause Pete was playing this loud from the stereo and we were like “Oh shit! You like Goapele? This is the shit we play on Sunday mornings to do yoga and then our roommate mocks us for our flagrant weekend patchoulism! I am so pumped you like Goapele too!!” Then Pete was like, “Uh, yeah, this is a Charles Hamilton remix. I don’t like Goapele. You just clowned yourselves. Hardee har har.” Okay WORD but you know what Pete? Charles Hamilton obviously feels Goapele, as that’s whose beat he chose for this track, and Charles Hamilton is an utterly solid dude, as is his guest MC Lyte, who could totes Brazilian-ninjitsu your ass in like 22 seconds and, indeed, does so on her verse. Charles is also hilarious on the intro, but he gets really deep and mind-spirally, a nice element of depth to his normally wit-spitting stee.

For a long time we were lamenting the dearth of lady rappers in our social consciousness and then BOOM, they were everywhere, and we became stoked. We have been TiVo’ing Miss Rap Supreme on el regular, and when Lil Mama can get a video in heavy-ro that looks like it was filmed in Boot Camp Click era Brooklyn, wearing a hoodie on a rooftop no less, we know something is hella hella RIGHT. Some of our fave-faves are Bmore’s Get ‘Em Mamis, who are some of the realest chicks we ever interviewed (FADER 53!) They are dropping a new mix every week this summer with freestyles over the hottest classic female MC’s (whoever says “femcees” first gets a shank in the eye) tracks. The first two? Salt n Pepa’s “Push It” and MC Lyte’s “10% Dis,” obvs our request is that Yo-Yo’s “You Can’t Play with My Yo-Yo” is next, considering it is literally one FADER staffer’s favorite song of all time, and is played at least once a week on her iPod, but usually more than that because she likes to put it on repeat it is so awesome. But anyway. Power to the chicas.
