Video Premiere: Memory Cassette: “Surfin/Body in the Water”
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Memory Cassette basically nails the sound of alienation in their music. Not in the “no one understands me” sense of alienation—it’s more like a slight dislocation, as if they’re trying to encapsulate those weird moments when you’re half paying attention and it feels like you’ve stepped out of your body to watch everything going on around you. It’s a half-disconnected dreamy pop, so it makes sense the band keeps making videos cobbled together from semi-obscure movie footage you can’t quite place. Or maybe director Pat Vamos just really likes Tawny Kitaen’s appearance in Crystal Heart.
Exclusive Premiere: Memory Cassette, “Last One Awake (CFCF RMX)” MP3
Memory Cassette just dropped their Call & Response EP, which is all excellently woozy, rhythmic cloud-surfing… but it’s already completely sold out. Rather, the 500 limited edition hard copies are sold out… enterprising young internetters may still cop the digital traxx from Acephale, and in the interest of preserving our well-preened reputation as the anti-Debbie Downers of music reportage, we present to you a remix of “Last One Awake” by our main dude CFCF, the Quebecois whose thoughtful synthpop tracks stay on the office stereo. For “Last One Awake” he’s worked the gauziness of Memory Cassette’s fabric into a “Rhythm is a Dancer”y nuovo trance, his choppy synths and muted drums dramatizing the Memory Cassette vocals you can never quite see past the mist. A whole remix EP is coming later this week, videos to follow, so feel free to wait with bated breath.

Freeload: Memory Tapes, “Bicycle”
- story THE FADER
Memory Tapes is the union of Weird Tapes and Memory Cassette, which was kind of basically the same thing in the first place, it’s just got a married name now. “Bicycle” is the first single and it’s the best thing we’ve heard all day, with siren vocals, crystal-castle synths, and a bounding bassline that fits somewhere within the summer’s futura-disco and goth-revivalist memes, but not trying to be either or anything, really, except awesome. We want to stand at the top of a waterfall and sing along with the echo breaks while growing a unicorn horn, or at the very least listen to this 24 more times in a row. Unnnggghhh it’s so good!

Freeload: Memory Cassette, “Last One Awake” (Friend Version) MP3
- story THE FADER
Memory Cassette is soon to have a 7-inch on FADER favorite labels Acephale and Sincerely Yours, from which “Last One Awake” is taken. This remix by new friend Friend we caught over at Discobelle. That seems like a lot to report for a nice song. What we do want to tell you is that apparently “Friend Version” means “version that sounds like Stevie Nicks on ’ludes in the Caribbean.” Much of Memory Cassette, who was/is Weird Tapes, sounds like riding a carousel in the dark, and if that’s your thing there are many mp3s to be downloaded on his site.
