American Jacket

Probably the weirdest part about the music industry tumbling all at once is the alternative methods of promotion that have sprung up in the wake. Not that it’s a new thing for bands to appear on animated shows, but as far as we know, this is the first time that six—SIX!—songs from a single band will be integrated into a show’s story. Normally we’d be like, That SUCKS! How are they going to defile the sanctity of such carefully crafted visual programming?!? (We’re not being sarcastic either, at the right time TV is great). But this situation has two things going for it, one is that the show is American Dad, which we’ve never actually seen more than five minutes of (sorry, millionaire Seth MacFarlane!), and two, the special guests are My Morning Jacket, which means that we’ll hopefully get some out of control guitar solos or at least a drawing of Jim James in crazy sasquatch boots.

We’ve been known to download the occasional Grateful Dead bootleg, have had more than a few excited conversations about new Animal Collective songs ripped from soundboards, and have already set a Google alert for “Phish reunion hampton mp3″. Now we can add My Morning Jacket’s New Year’s Eve show at Madison Square Garden to the virtual bootleg shoebox. There’s a bunch of audio nerd stuff in the description that we’re not going to repeat (although if you’re curious it was recorded from “Section 6, Row H-FOB, very slightly right of center aisle”). Instead, we’re just going to tell you that the Jacket’s pitch perfect cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” starts the whole thing off on a high note and it only gets better from there. Did we mention this’ll cost you nothing to listen to?

Who Will Play Jerry Garcia?

The Hollywood Reporter just announced a new Jerry Garcia biopic to be produced by some of the guys behind Election, Little Miss Sunshine and Hamlet 2. So, while we have recently treated Jerry with a fair amount of reverence, this version of his life during the years just before founding the Grateful Dead will apparently be a black comedy with plenty of slapstick and a dash of family drama. In light of that, we have compiled our top suggestions for the role of Papa Jerry…

Video: My Morning Jacket, “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Part 2″

While The FADER Light & Magic team prefers using our Photoshop 1.0 to scrawl chickenscratch and put Kanye’s head on Enemy Mine stills, video directors the Mixtape Club employ Adobe’s award-winning software to make the cutest monkey ever for the cutest musical monkeys ever My Morning Jacket. From the Mixtape fellows themselves:

Set deep in a verdant jungle on a dark night, “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2″ stars a furry, timid creature with gigantic eyes. Mixtape Club drew from an array of inspirations such as the BBC’s “Planet Earth”, foliage plucked from the streets of New York City, and the work of Russian animator Yuri Norstein. The jungle world was built entirely from elements painted digitally in Photoshop. The finished product is a haunting, seemingly hand-painted, lonely story with a touch of fairy tale sweetness.

Freeload: My Morning Jacket, “Evil Urges”

So this song leaked on Friday or over the weekend or whatever and it’s great and totally MMJ style but plus some Prince influence and Prince and MMJ are playing at Coachella and what if there is a crazy fluke where they become one band and do the jammingest set in the history of jams and then albums fall out of the sky and it turns out that the albums are new Outkast albums with Andre rapping and Dre finishes Detox and RZA’s basement never flooded. Also, we spent all weekend with Evil Urges and it sounds like being caught in a rainstorm that is made out of beautiful flowers.

“All Eyes On” My Morning Jacket

Current TV, the cable network founded by Al Gore who The FADER recently partnered with for a symposium on Future of Non-Fiction Film, is expanding its content into the world of music (and the world of The FADER mega-favorites) tonight with the premiere of All Eyes on My Morning Jacket, a video of the Jacket’s performance with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra at last year’s Lollapalooza. The video was created out of hundreds of fans’ videos and photos from both cameras and phones. It debuts at 10pm EST tonight, but you can watch the above teaser to get an idea of what to expect.
