Master-Piece Make Bags For Opening Ceremony
- story Chioma Nnadi
Tracking down a bag by Osaka-based accessory specialists Master-Piece
used to involve a Japanese translator, Paypal and a lot of eBay heartache—we were lucky enough to sniff out our awesome purple 60/40 back pack in a menswear store in Boston last fall. The label has been consistently making stylish but highly functional bags (no bells, no whistles) for the past 15 years, and the new collaboration with Opening Ceremony showcases everything we love about the line, especially the lovely suede color combos. Now the only question left is, do we keep carrying that heavy load on our backs? Or go with the nifty over-the-shoulder instead?
A Visit to The Foundation: New Goodies From Huf, Generic Man, Play Cloths and More
- story Chioma Nnadi
The Foundation is home to some of our favorite brands, and an invitation to see the new collections at their showroom is always a chance to play imaginary dress-up with our digital cameras. After the jump, a very tight edit of what we’re feeling for the holiday season and beyond.

On The Street: Chelsea
- story Chioma Nnadi
Sometimes putting together a good outfit is as simple as picking up the most flavorful classics off the bedroom floor—a good plaid shirt, some chinos and a simple pair of plimsoles (in this case the Opening Ceremony for Keds kicks that hit the shop floor earlier this month).
Opening Ceremony Tokyo Is Best Store Ever?
- story Peter Macia
Having spent plenty of time (and plenty of nonexistent money) at both Opening Ceremony NYC and LA, and having spent a little bit of time and what seemed like a little bit of money (pre-conversion) in Shibuya, the idea of an Opening Ceremony in Shibuya was simultaneously terrifying and glorious. If you haven’t been to OC in the US, both locations are of a decent, yet relatively modest size for stores carrying so many desirable items. Colette in Paris is comparable, but OC doesn’t bother with gadgets or crafts and its price tags aren’t nearly as shock-inducing. If you haven’t been to Shibuya, there are high-rise malls catering specifically to teenage girls with dozens of stores specializing in the narrowest niches, like Madonna circa “Like A Virgin” or That One Girl From The “Hip Hop Hooray” Video. Shit is crazy. And awesome. And makes you want to buy things. It’s like Swine Flu only instead of a runny nose, you go broke and have to return something just to get back to the airport.
Opening Ceremony Tokyo opened yesterday and is a combination of both these threads: a carefully curated boutique the size of K-Mart. It is eight stories putting on display all that is wonderful about OC owners Humberto Leon and Carol Lim and drew a crowd of frenzied shoppers and celebrities, including the first solo performance by Julian Casablancas. We had some friends there and they suck. Just kidding, they are awesome, but we are crazily jealous, yet still thankful because a trip like that would’ve broken our families for generations. Check out some photos at Opening Ceremony blog and a firsthand wrap-up on Everything Is Annoying. And by all means, if you make it over there at some point, feel free to pick up a little something (everything) for us.
Opening Ceremony Japan Mix by DJ Myles and DJ Lindsey
- story Chioma Nnadi
Opening Ceremony Japan opens its doors in exactly four days, which means all of us poor New York sods will officially be shopping on the wrong side of the planet. Jason Schwartzman appeared in a charming video ditty for his favorite store earlier this week, flying an OC-crested kite in the rain, and now our dear friends DJ Lindsey and DJ Myles have posted the grand opening mixtape. Last time we spoke to the Tipleys, they were busy prepping for their trip to Toyko, and judging by the melange (Dam Funk, Animal Collective, Theophilus London), our homies have packed a suitcase full of stylish opening night jams for Jason, Andrew Kuo, Julian Casablancas et al to get loose to. Tracklisting after the jump and tickets to Tokyo here.

Betsey Johnson Runway Video Archive
- story Chioma Nnadi
It’s taken us a few days to digest the archive of awesome that Betsey Johnson recently posted on her website. And honestly between the 10 amazing fashion shows—starting with the fall of 1979 and stretching right up through to the early ’90s—it’s almost impossible to pick favorites. Do we go with the Lion-King-meets-Lawrence-of-Arabia vibes Johnson channels for spring ‘84? Or ride for her fall ‘82 bleach-blonde fembots? In any case the videos are the best kind of sartorial teaser we can think of for the new Betsey Johnson X Opening Ceremony collection, due to hit the store any day now and featured in our current Drake/Girls Fall Fashion issue on newsstands now.
Stylee Fridays: Black Frame Spring 2010 Men’s Preview
- story Chioma Nnadi
If we had to pull together a dream team of the best and brightest in menswear today, we would recruit just about every brand represented by Black Frame. The New York creative agency opened their doors to the press this week, and Malkiel (pictured and wearing Acne shirt, Woolrich shorts and OC boots) and Poppy (too shy to be pictured) gave us the tour of their spring 2010 menswear collections, with new offerings from Opening Ceremony, Adam Kimmel, Woolrich Woolen Mills and Acne. Besides digital lookbooks or catwalk pics, previews like these are the first time we get to run our fingers along the racks, and see a collection front to back. Check out the styles we’ve have pegged for next year after the jump.

Chloe Sevigny and Her Red Army
- story Chioma Nnadi
When it comes to dropping a new collection, Chloe Sevigny knows how to make an entrance—and our girl is certainly never afraid to pull in an artsy friend or two for extra pizazz. For fall 09 Sevigny’s enlisted the likes of fashion photographer David Armstrong and artist Aurel Schmidt for a special lookbook-slash-artbook called Reds, a follow-up to the Chloe flipbook she released with Mark Borthwick last time around. The new lookbook is one big fashion love letter to red-headed beauties—Lissy Trullie is in there of course, as is up-and-comer Camille, a model we shot in the winter of 2007 with art photographer Martina Ivanow for a models-at-home fashion story. Opening Ceremony have posted behind-the-scene pics from the shoot at Armstrong’s Bed Stuy brownstone, along with a few choices pieces of art from the book. Somehow the awesome fluffy animal print sweaters she’s designed for next season do look best accessorized with a fizz of ginger hair.

Terence Koh Does Opening Ceremony
- story Chioma Nnadi
If you’ve walked by Opening Ceremony in Chinatown recently, you might have noticed the two nude male mannequins standing in the window entwined in neon tubing. “The Whole Family” installation was created by newlywed Terence Koh, and yesterday, store owner Humberto Leon posted an interesting Q&A with his friend and collaborator, along with behind-the-scene polaroids of Koh at work at play—Koh taking his mannequins by the hand and playfully inspecting their plastic uhm, packets. Apparently Koh does not want the series of shirts he’s designed to be thought of as clothes—he prefers the idea of them being objects, hence the nude models out front. To explain the Pearl Shirt, Koh recites a haiku about a silent pearl that is chasing a rabbit. As far as we know, there is no literature to support the Pink Boy Bullet Hole Shirt, pictured here. As far as wearable objects go though, this one is definitely the most awesome and tangible.
