Live: Diesel U:Music Miami (Santigold Lives!)

It’s been about two years since we put Santigold on the cover of F51, but since she played Studio B for the issue’s release party she’s been harder to find than someone willing to love us for us, and not just because we can score them tickets to Wild Yaks shows. Sure, Santi put on for her city on Jiggaman’s “Brooklyn (We Go Hard)” and even beefed up Major Lazer’s “Hold The Line” but then the videos for both were just balmy cartoons. This past Tuesday, however, we witnessed Santi in all her leopard print/white short set glory, along with Kid Cudi, Jemina Pearl, DJ Mom Jeans and a brain-scrambling noise dance troupe called the Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! at Diesel’s U:Music Miami stop. Though both Cudi and Jemina have promising debut albums to their credit, it was Santi (and a pair of lithe dancers) who reminded us how wrong we’ve been to have neglected Santogold in recent months. We also found out that she’s been training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with Lupe Fiasco and a bunch of other people for charity, and by the time the people were rushing the stage to wild out to Momjeans closing out on the wheels, we were swooning again just like the first time we heard “Creator.”

N.E.R.D. f. Santigold, “Soldier” MP3
- story Matthew Schnipper
If there was ever a song that made us want to play Tony Hawk 2 for PlayStation (OG ugly gray Playstation), it is “Soldier.” The first level that was basically an empty warehouse with tons of room to skate on broken poles and makeshift halfpipes was awesome, totally soundtracked by that Anthrax and Public Enemy collaboration. N.E.R.D. and Santigold keep up the 2000s version of the Judgment Night soundtrack with the slightly ska-tinged song they played live on Kimmel with Lil Wayne back in March. It’s a rad song simply for the complete abandon they put into it. There is no way Pharrell would go this hard with N.E.R.D. if he didn’t strongly, like with his life’s blood, believe that he is kicking out the jams. And because of that fervor, he kind of nails it: fast-rapping, jokingly pissed off over some snappy So-Cal snare drums. So what if it kind of sounds like Suicide Machines playing the Inspector Gadget theme song.

Jeremy Scott’s Cartoon Savannah
Jeremy Scott’s first collection for Adidas, released earlier this year, was a glittery-gold selection of irresistibly cut (wearable) harem pants, sequins, sporty fringed tanks and coveted winged hightops. His next installment abandons his black-gold-and-silver, Studio 54 color palette for a hue explosion and elongation of the tribal streetwear trend pioneered by MIA and Cassette Playa. Leopard-spotted sweatshirts, global mapped bodycon dresses and “tribal mask”-printed, exposed-pocket track suits all make appearances in this eminently watchable video collaboration with the video director Nabil. Appropriately, The Very Best, Esau Mwamwaya, MIA and Santigold soundtrack the trampoliney splashing around his collection apparently demands.

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 13 – Washington D.C.
- story THE FADER
It’s been a minute since we just sat back and enjoyed the energy-rock stylings of FADER Label’s Matt & Kim on the Bacardi B-LIVE 2009, so when the duo rejoined the party train in the nation’s capital recently, we just pointed and shot and it turned out pretty good. Stay tuned for more episodes from future dates along the way including interviews, live performances and who knows what else only on FADER TV.

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 12 – Philly
- story THE FADER
As Bacardi B-Live 2009 rolled into Philly, it wisely added that city’s most storied DJ, Diplo, and his infamous UK Major Lazer partner, Switch, to the bill. Coincidentally, these dudes are also on the cover of The FADER’s brand new issue. We interviewed them issue and it is a great read. Such a great read that we decided to interview them again for FADER TV. Maybe we’ll interview them again next week. And the week after that. There is only one way to find out and that is to continue checking for these videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday right here. Nice suits, dudes!

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 11 – Boston
- story THE FADER
Bacardi B-LIVE 2009 and Beantown came together for some unBelievably Bonkers Bananatownery recently, so of course we hit up Best Beatjuggler under the Big Blue Sky… oh, it’s A-Trak, sorry about that, thought it was a B thing. Anyway! Dude is still nice with it! He blogs excellently for FADER and is one of the nicest dudes we know. So of course as soon as we had the chance we caught up with him to talk about his progression as a DJ and his globetrotting prowess. Stay tuned for more episodes from future dates along the way including interviews, live performances and who knows what else only on FADER TV.

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 9 – St. Louis
- story THE FADER
The Mizzou leg of Bacardi B-LIVE 2009 brought Santigold and her fierce-ass dancers for a show we’ve now seen 1,376 times but never gets old. Maybe it’s their outfits. NOPE, IT’S THE JAMS. Stay tuned for more episodes from future dates along the way including interviews, live performances and who knows what else only on FADER TV.

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 8 – Chicago
- story THE FADER
On the last stop of Bacardi B-LIVE we saw Q-Tip work Milwaukee momentarily. This time around, we caught him backstage for an interview, got him to list his favorite new rappers and then went back out front to watch him tear down solo joints and Tribe classics alike. Stay tuned for more episodes from future dates along the way including interviews, live performances and who knows what else only on FADER TV.

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 7 – Milwaukee
- story THE FADER
After the anti-hip hop debacle in Kansas City, some people might have pulled the plug on rap to ease venue tensions. Bacardi B-LIVE 2009 rolled on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and headlined the next show with Q-Tip, and as you’ll see in the video above, there were no problems. Imagine that! Stay tuned for more episodes from future dates along the way including interviews, live performances and who knows what else only on FADER TV.

FADER TV: On the Road with Bacardi B-LIVE, Episode 6 — The Jazzy Jeff Incident!
- story THE FADER
We hinted at it in the post for the last episode, but here is the actual video from Bacardi B-LIVE 2009’s stop in Kansas City, where Jazzy Jeff was forced offstage by the venue for playing hip hop. We don’t want to jump to any conclusions here, but everyone in American has seen The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, right? Maybe not. Regardless, Z-Trip was bummed, Jeff was bummed, Skillz got totally thrown out of the club—it was enough melodrama for the Huffington Post! Stay tuned for more episodes from future dates along the way including interviews, live performances and who knows what else only on FADER TV.
