Video: Slim Thug f. The Daily Show, “Still A Boss”

Slim Thug spent the past two nights on The Daily Show detailing his recession woes—not being able to make it rain, less video hoes—to Wyatt Cenac. You know, one night after our weekly East Village Radio show, we were eating at Lil Frankie’s, the Italian restaurant next door, and Slim Thug came through. Frankie’s is certainly not the cheapest restaurant in the world, but it’s more Bon Appetit than Gourmet, and we all know how that worked out. So perhaps he has been working up to this new penny pincher attitude. After his appearance on the show the first night, solemnly firing his trusted hypeman for being too blunted when they perform, ultimately not really worth the money, Slim Thug came back with an actual song—that is, it should be noted, better than a lot of music we hear—and video showing he’s curbed his spendthrift ways (though they do have a nice closeup on his giant chain, now apparently a relic of woebegone times). Regardless, We push Smart Cars is a strange thing to come out of anyone’s mouth who is not Weird Al.

Video: Slim Thug, “Thug”

We want Slim Thug to succeed, we really do, but “I Ran” was so not what we wanted to hear that it cast a pall over the rest of Boss of All Bosses. So much so, in fact, that we overlooked “Thug,” the Mr. Lee produced creeper that sounds like it came right out of the DJ Paul playbook: buzzing low-end keys and a freaky vocal sample that would be perfect for Project Pat. Honestly, this video is kind of whatever—notable only because Slim Thug cut off his beaded braids(!)—but it comes just in time for us to pretend that this was the actual first single instead of the third from an album that came out late March.

Freeload: Santigold f. Gucci Mane “Unfreakable Girl” + “Still Tippin’ It”

Santigold, Slim Thug and Gucci Mane all occupy large swaths of the FADER Master Computer’s hard drive so when we heard these unofficial collabs off Terry Urban’s banned Southerngold mixtape, we didn’t really have a choice but to put them up. The rest of that tape, which you can find pretty easily, is not as kosher, just some clumsy mash-ups of recent classic Southern rap (”Go Crazy,” “Still Tippin’” etc) and Santi’s debut album instrumentals, but these two sound legit. Maybe Atlantic will hear these and hire Major Lazer to produce Gucci’s next album.

Freeload: Big Chief f. Bobby Valentino & Slim Thug, “Check”

Man, if this isn’t southern playalistic Cadillac funky music, we don’t know what is. Dallas rising star Big Chief knows a little something about summer anthems, but Slim Thug compliments Chief’s D-town cruising narrative like the gangsta part in Chief’s waves. Word on the internets is that Eat Greedy Vol. 8 will be in stores momentarily, but this should hold us over until it drops, if not until we have to get our minks out of storage.

Video: Trae f. Slim Thug, “Nuthin 2 A Boss” + “Million Bucks” f. Jayton & Boss

We were actually getting a little worried that we weren’t going to fulfill our character from the Wire appearing in a rap video quota this week—but then this Trae two video epic came out, and there’s Slim Charles in the second half sitting on the steps! That was close. We’re not sure what the thinking is in releasing this directly on the heels of the Trae as a biker video, but we’re also not going to question it too much because any new Trae is welcome, especially when it contains a song-stealing verse from Jayton and the return of Slim Thug, who’s Already Platinum is still in rotation.

Freeload: Boss Hog Outlawz, “Ride Wit No Ceiling”

Slim Thug kinda fell off the map after Already Platinum, but we still rode for him as well as his homies Killa Kyleon and the rest of the Boss Hog Outlawz (GEN F in issue 33), now they are back with this song—a slow Houston anthem that creeps as much as it bounces. The craziest thing about it is how spare it sounds compared to most of the rap we’ve been hearing this year. Not that we’re mad at trance-rap or whatever it’s called today, but sometimes it’s cool to hear something meant for driving on a hot afternoon instead of riding speedboats really fast with our arms in the air to (not that we aren’t doing both daily).

Audio: Z-Ro f. Lil James & Slim Thug, “Alcohol Nutts”

This is buried so deep on Woss Ness’ Bangin’ Screw Vol. 2 that we’re not even sure why it got made or it how it came into our possession, but we are posting it because anytime Z-Ro raps about knocking out drunks on a mic that was probably taped together and plugged into a shitty Dell we get a chill down our spines. Not to mention, the last verse might very well be from a Slim Thug impostor, whose mere existence makes life worth living.

Audio: Slim Thug f. TGT, “Let Me Grind”

We’re pretty sure Tyrese sent this to us from his personal email which is pretty fucking foreboding but is overridden by the Slim Thug (raps) and the Polow da Don (musics) affiliations. TGT, in case you’re wondering, is Tank-Ginuwine-Tyrese… feel the wifebeater madness. Really though, this is kind of a hit. At least in one corner of our office.
