The Wild Things Are on Cahuenga Blvd

The last time we wrote about Urban Outfitters it ignited a firestorm of controversy over bicycles, so this time we’re going to keep it nice and simple. Spike Jonze just posted some behind-the-scenes photos of the new Where The Wild Things Are pop-up gallery/shop/fanfest at the Urban store on Cahuenga in Hollywood. Wild Things DP Lance Acord is handpicking stills to display in the store’s window and some other folks are building a crazy forest cave thing inside. Jonze also writes there will be some special items for sale in the store, possibly including Christian Joy’s specially made Wild Things outfits, at the opening this Saturday night, and that all proceeds will go to benefit the Wild Things co-screenwriter Dave Eggers’ 826LA writing program. Music will be provided by Jonze’s brother Squeak E. Clean. (via We Love You So)

Video: Tron Legacy Official Trailer + New Daft Punk

When the first Tron came out in 1982, Japanese toy manufacturer TOMY released the action figures and Lightcycles to go along with it, the latter coming with a zip cord that if pulled out hard enough could send the cycles hurtling toward dogs and feet with horrifying velocity. The Tron Legacy official HD trailer, which is almost exclusively focused on the cycles, was released late last week and only the corporate overlords at Disney know what the associated licensing extravaganza will bring to kids (dudes over 30) the world over, but we imagine it will be not quite as lo-fi, probably involving some kind of Wii deprivation suit that immerses kids (dudes) fully into the mainframe. Regardless, the trailer has been on the internet in full blur since last year’s Comic-Con, so Disney had to up their game to excite the attendees at this year’s installment, which wrapped up yesterday in San Diego. They did so by funneling anxious people through a Tron-ish tunnel to a room housing a full-size Lightcycle with, presumably, a song from Daft Punk’s soundtrack blasting. It’s hard to tell if the person in the front row starts freaking out because of the bike or the song, but it is pretty entertaining either way.

With much less fanfare and showmanship, a short behind-the-scenes video for Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are appeared this weekend as well and reveals a bit of that movie’s score composed by Karen O.

Video: AsDSSka, “Hold On”

We imagine it’s difficult to shoot an appropriate video for lovely abstract piano music such as AsDSSka’s “Hold On,” but this Crystal Moselle/Spike Jonze-directed piece is perfect: unraveling flowers and half-inflated silver foil balloons bumping into ceiling fans sounds boring on paper, in practice it is beautiful. Incidentally, AsDSSka’s new 7″ of is the inaugural release on the new record label of Family Bookstore, who we profiled in FADER #58.

Video: Holy Shit Where The Wild Things Are Is Actually Coming Out

By now you’ve probably seen the preview for the long-awaited Spike Jonze/Dave Eggers Where the Wild Things Are collabo. We are excited! After all the rumors that it terrified little kids in the test audiences and the studio was considering firing Jonze, or that all three of the Jonas Brothers were going to play Max (we just made that up), it looks like the film is actually coming out as Jonze intended it in October. Let’s hope it does. And get ready for the Halloween costume onslaught because how cool does this look? If you’re not at least curious about seeing this you have no soul. Just saying.

Video: Kanye West, “Flashing Lights”

What’s great about Kanye is that he figures out the shortest route to everything: success, stardom, making Daft Punk popular, slotted eyewear, the list goes on. And with his video for “Flashing Lights,” co-directed with Spike Jonze, he’s figured out how to avoid trips to therapy. It’s all right there on the screen! And it’s shot in that slo-mo, one take style Spike used to use all the time that only he seems to do right. Also, that girl is fit. Also, apparently when Kanye showed this at a Grammy afterparty, Nas said, “That video is fucking incredible!” Well said.

New-ish Stills from Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are is going to be the best movie of 2009. Okay we’re making this judgment based on a couple fuzzy pictures, but you know what, no one told your mom to calm down after the ultrasound, pal, so let it be. This most recent still shows young Max (Max Records) standing among the Wild Things (an earlier still is after the jump). Adapted by Jonze and Dave Eggers from Maurice Sendak’s book, with a soundtrack supposedly involving Karen O, Wild Things is now in post-production, so expect more images to leak over the coming months.
