Suckers, “Out On The Water” MP3

“Out On The Water” is the b-side to Suckers‘ Make Mine-released 7-inch for “It Gets the Body Movin’,” premiered here way back in January. Starting with a trumpet line that’s pretty strongly indebted to “Taps,” and some space odyssey keys, “Out On The Water” mashes up a lot of feelings, slowly bounding its way into something that probably needed a lot of weed and wine to reach fruition (as is probably the case with a lot of Suckers songs). Buy the 7-inch here and buy the weed and wine wherever you feel comfortable doing so.

We have some hazy memories of seeing a bunch of Suckers flyers and noticing that they were really into weird imagery involving various fruits and vegetables with mouths and dismembered heads on spears. For their first video, they wisely shy away from that so they don’t scare the shit out of everyone who presses play, instead going the iTunes visualizer route—singing over crazy lasers or underwater or in a green-tinted living room. Sometimes their heads are connected to exploding fish monsters. Turns out this is just a totally different kind of creepy.

You can’t help but feel that New York quartet Suckers are channeling the pop ghost of Talking Heads with their self-titled Suckers EP (out 4/14 on IAMSOUND). Their use of clean, reverb-drenched guitars, simple percussion hooks, a smattering of horns, keys, synths, programmed beats, group choruses, harmonies, other happy noises and good old-fashioned whistling would do David Byrne & Co. proud. This band sounds just plain happy to be here, and they would like nothing more than to make you happy to be here too. On “It Gets Your Body Movin’,” Suckers bang out a simple sailor’s melancholy chorus with a smile. We don’t know how, but they make sad seem happy.

In fourth grade, after we had our fill of Gary Paulson, we decided to pay attention in the vocabulary section of class and learned the meaning of the word “serendipity.” Chocolate chip cookies and x-rays were both invented serendipitously. We had to list things we found serendipitously. Because we can travel time we went to early May 2008 and listed Suckers after a particularly hurried to see Ladyhawk friend made us get there really early to make sure we didn’t miss a single bearded note, even though we just wanted to chill at that pho spot on 6th Street a little longer. But Suckers were opening with a trumpet and shorts and slip ons in the rain and male yodel and some heartfelt and forest born emotions. It’s a good thing we were thing because we like that kind of thing.

NYC: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Wild Yaks, Suckers + The Muslims

We’re still debating whether it’s sad or really exciting that a concert has come along where we actually want to see every act on the bill. We saw Suckers open for Ladyhawk awhile back and only really knew about them because Quinn Walker, who is in the band, had a solo double album where the cover was a dude vomiting rainbows or at least looking like the type of guy who would vomit rainbows. Other than that, you know how we feel about Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson—we put him on the back cover of our Summer Music issue and have been playing his album pretty much every night since we almost overlooked it when it came through the mail chute. And Wild Yaks, what haven’t we said about Wild Yaks? Actually a lot. One of the dudes works at a shoe store and they aren’t annoying about having a saxophone, which should be a selling point on its own. Lucky for them (and us) they also create epic sing-alongs and sound great live. You can listen to some of their live recordings on their MySpace. Finally, The Muslims—who we have only posted about when making lists of all the bands performing at festivals—are also playing. Because they are also good but we haven’t given them much attention, listen to and download “Beside Myself” below. There’s a bunch more for the downloading at their MySpace. Hit up Union Pool tonight to catch all of these bands and check out the pretty ugly but kinda awesome flyer after the jump.
