The War On Drugs Expands Internet Operations

Scared you didn’t we, pothead? Don’t worry, the DEA is probably only slightly more internet savvy than John McCain (he’s “getting on” soon), but we are speaking of Philadelphia’s The War On Drugs, the band, anyway. We have spoken about them before which you may not remember (you are a pothead), and put them in the Gen F section of the magazine. And now they have a new video, directed by Mark Shonenveld, for “Needle In Your Eye” off their excellent debut Wagonwheel Blues that makes us oddly wistful for childhood road trips through the expansive American West, though it is presumably a statement in visuals about the white man’s desecration of sacred lands. Either way, read the Gen F from FADER 54 after the jump.

Freeload: The War On Drugs, “Taking The Farm”

It’s not often that we totally nerd out and say things like: This album is so well sequenced, because, like, what does that even really mean? It turns out that it means The War on Drugs‘ upcoming Wagonwheel Blues is JAMMING and also totally Springsteeny and Dylany without getting caught up in all the nostalgia that comes along with taking cues from those dudes. The War on Drugs made a totally serious album, shimmering and sprawling—it’s as inspiring as it is exhausting and dense. Download the first single “Taking the Farm” below, and check for the album (just in time for summer evenings) on June 17th.

Freeload: The War On Drugs Barrel Of Batteries EP

This has actually been available for free download for about a month but because we’re having a War on Drugs morning and Jamming The Fuck Out, we thought we’d draw your attention to the fact that you can download an entire EP worth of their music for free (zero dollars). Keep a lookout for the full length Wagonwheel Blues coming out soonish on Secretly Canadian, and check out some songs from the album that are not on the EP on their MySpace here.

Freeload: The War On Drugs, “Buenos Aires Beach”

When we first heard The War on Drugs we were like Oh shit this sounds like Bruce Springsteen and then we did an air drum solo and had a dream about Clarence Clemons shredding on the sax (can you shred on the sax?) So basically, yeah, they jam. “Buenos Aires Beach,” up for download from our dudes at RCRD LBL is a little different from some of their other stuff—more subdued and Dylanesque and giving us futuristic visions of when we will own all 26 The War on Drugs LPs and we will sit on the floor next to our record player, wearing lambswool and thinking about Christmas. There’s a lot of thinking and dreaming in this post, but that’s what The War on Drugs is doing to us.
