Weekday Fall 09 Should Be On Our Doorstep
- story Chioma Nnadi
Now that Topshop is within spitting distance of the Hudson, it’s time to start lusting for other European stores that should have US outposts but don’t, namely Weekday, an off-shoot of Sweden’s Cheap Monday. CM’s founders, Örjan Andersson and Adam Friberg, started with a second-hand store in Stockholm called Weekend (it was only open on Saturdays and Sundays), and from the root of that tiny little shop springs their empire. If you’ve ever been to a Weekday store then you’ll know there’s usually an entire level dedicated to jeans and an upper level of non-denim goodies, including vintage pieces and indie designers. The fall lookbook is a mish-mash of all the many labels available at the Weekday store, vintage and non-vintage. Even if we can’t bribe our Scandinavian lovechild to ship us the whole collection, the Village People stylings and GI Joe flourishes (beanie and military boots for the boys) are good inspirational bookmarks if nothing else.
Stylee Fridays: Mjolk Spring 2010
- story Chioma Nnadi
If you were to take the wardrobe wishlists of every FADER staffer and fuse them together at random, the collective fantasy closet would look something like this:
1. A blinged-out Topshop bodycon dress
2. A pair of Cutler and Gross perspex specs
3. A Military camo button down (one that actually went through a war, the more fucked up the better)
4. One bright red union suit (just to chill around the house)
When it comes to constructing an entirely new look though, it helps to start with a person, or group of stylish peoples for inspiration, which is why Mjolk’s new spring 2010 collection—previewed at Capsule—really got us thinking. Mjolk designer Lars Stoten had the Lost Generation of artists in mind when he was designing the new collection, specifically Ezra Pound and Ernest Hemingway. That ’20s set of artsy ex-pats spent most of their time in Paris, but Stoten re-imagines the crew on vacation in the south of France, and the outfits they might have worn while sipping Chardonnay with Picasso or frolicking on the beach with Kiki de Montparnasse. The pants are all loose, lovely and painterly, with Limoncello-colored jeans and a casually polished powderpink suit that seems just as fit for Riviera living back then as it would be now.

Style: Barbara Hulanicki for Topshop
- story THE FADER
Barbara Hulanicki pretty much masterminded the look of a generation back in the ’60s and ’70s with her London-based label Biba—her swinging dresses and thigh-grazing minis were the stuff that dollfaces like Twiggy were raised on. Hulanicki has designed a capsule collection for Topshop, and the pieces we’ve got our eye on are covered in playful print that looks like a cross between hand-drawn animal print and translucent bubbles in a lava lamp. The clothes hit stores next week, and this subtle power-shouldered number that’s going for under $100 is just the kind of encouragement we need to get our daddy long legs out.
Style TV: Behind the Scenes Shop Talk Special at Topshop
- story THE FADER
On our maiden voyage to Topshop a couple of weeks ago (oh the lines!), we were lucky enough to have Topshop Style Advisor Keri Gibbs help us navigate the whopping four floors of goodness. This week, the gorgeous Gibbs was lovely enough to invite us in to Topshop’s VIP showroom, for a special behind the scenes edition of Shop Talk and peek at what will be hitting the store in the weeks to come. Appointments for the advisor are pretty much booked through early May, which is probably still good timing to get your sunnies/bikini/sundress game in order before the heatwaves hit.
Stylee Fridays: Topshop Is Landing
- story THE FADER
It’s always only been a matter of time, a waiting game for the Topshop fairy to show up some place south of Houston and bless us with that extra special shopping juice. And while yes! our hearts are literally racing at the thought of Topshop finally coming to New York this fall, truth be told it was actually strangely bittersweet to see the wonderful certainty of it all unfolding at the official, first ever Topshop NYC preview this week. After all Topshop has been our not-so-secret dirty little secret for a very very long time (topshop.com now has international shipping, go get it!).
Take a glance at what’s in store though, and it is really really hard to not be intensely excited. The sheer volume of clothes is overwhelming. It’s obviously going to be insanely difficult to maintain any kind of shopping focus once the store opens—one minute you’re touching up a slinky Louise Goldin for Topshop knit dress, and the next a pair of Emma Cook boots (chunky, laced-up, awesome) has whisked you away. And as if the designer collabos weren’t enough they’ve even added a new line called Tux Deluxe, immaculately tailored pieces that include a disco-ready snakeskin print blazer you should probably bookmark.
Of course there’s just as much in there for the boys—racks upon racks of sharp suiting, knitted leggings for the nattier dressed gents and a slew of fancier design projects. The Black Trouser is one to look out for, with an impressive line-up of design talent that includes Patrick Ervell and Tim Hamilton who’ve all submitted their take on that particular sartorial staple. So yeah, we think we’ll be needing all 120-plus days left until Topshop lift-off just to figure out what the hell we plan to bag first!
