Yo Gotti, “Send Me An Angel” MP3
- story Felipe Delerme
Way back when Yo Gotti first declared himself the “King Of Memphis,” back when Three 6 Mafia were still heavy in the deck, back before he’d even had an album out, even his most genuine fans kind of wrote it off as lion cub rabble-rousing. Today, however, as unsigned as he ever was, with Ball and JG in hibernation, Young Buck having cried himself out of the rap game and Three 6 sliding further and further into the margins, it doesn’t seem all that far-fetched. This type of chronological introspection doesn’t bode well for everyone, but with all that upside, Gotti’s career trajectory, or lack thereof is outright strange. By the looks of things, he’s not exactly struggling, but it would also seem that faith is an awfully capable substitute for recognition.

There was once a time when dropping a mixtape with DJ Drama meant you had a major label album about to drop. Nowadays, tapes with Drama are albums. The latest example, Yo Gotti’s Cocaine Muzik 2, is only 13 tracks (perfect album length!) and is incredibly well-rounded for an album inspired by cocaine.

Aside from some early production work for younger Young Jeezy, DJ Speedy had kind of been flying under our radar until he linked up with two of our favorite G’s, Gucci Mane and Yo Gotti, for this single off his (hopefully) impending album. “Light Show” is minimal compared to most Speedy production (a sample of which he can be heard rapping over on an incredible song called “Gangsta Nerd” on his myspace page), but Gucci and Gotti have such limber singing voices that they’re able to fill the gaps nicely. Somewhere Johnny Gill is crying.

We thought Rick had nailed the Mann-Foxx-Farrell Miami Vice shit with “Money Make Me Come” but this goes a step beyond that. First, it ups the farty synths (the triumphant horns of ‘08), adds the girl chorus backed by a digital chipmunk singing “Take me to Miami tonight” like she’s addicted to the city itself, and uh Gotti. Gotti is brutal. Not groundbreaking in subject matter, just really good at making it sound really good. More jams like this and he’ll have more fans than Kuo and Kelefa in no time!
