Yura Yura Teikoku, “Hollow Me” MP3

There’s something about a well-placed saxophone that screams WEDDING JAMZ, and Japanese psych outfit Yura Yura Teikoku have that down pat. Normally we’d expect them to get much weirder, but “Hollow Me” sounds like aging gracefully, the audio equivalent of when you dance with your mom at your own wedding and everyone looks really proud of each other. But then that saxophone skronks a bit, just slightly jumping off the rails and suddenly it becomes less about that proud wedding dance and more like slipping off to smoke a joint with your uncle in the bathroom on the low.

Fans of incredible Japanese psych folk rock, today is your lucky day. 20 Jazz Funk Greats just put up the remix of the B-side to Yura Yura Teikoku’s latest “Dekinai” single, and if you remember (you probably don’t), we put up the remix of the A-side many many moons ago. So now all you need to do is buy the limited edition marbeled vinyl from DFA, get FADER #29, in which we wrote a lengthy feature on YYT, and you will have the beginnings of some kind of FADER/Yura Yura Teikoku collection, which will win you an assortment of friends, most of whom have at some point hung out in our office.

- story THE FADER
Every time FADER 29 feature subjects Yura Yura Teikoku come to the States, they manage to play a couple of shows in New York. Unfortunately, they only come to the States once a year, if at all, so this weekend’s opportunity to witness their incredibly ill psych rock meltdown should not be taken for granted. RCRD LBL just put up the remix DFA and Mesh-Key are sending around with the invite. The original, from 2007’s Hollow Me (Japan-only) was described by the band’s Shintaro Sakamoto as meaning, “‘I can’t do it,’ but it also has the nuance of ‘don’t give up.’ Pretend not to resist but secretly fight back—that might be the most effective form of resistance.” DFA is sending it around with the invite, so maybe they’re planning to put Hollow Me out in the US? We’ll see. In the meantime, check out the video for 2006’s “Kantsuu” above for an idea of what you’re gonna see at the shows, which take place on Sunday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and Monday at Maxwell’s in Hoboken.
