We were pretty sure the anniversary party of Shits N Giggles in downtown
LA would be interesting considering Andy Butler of
Hercules & Love Affair and Pat Mahoney were headlining, but our
suspicions were confirmed before we even got past the lobby.
Sure, we like the occasional night out, but it's not every day that we
have dudes with Anna Karina wigs and sailor outfits ushering through the door.
Things were even crazier inside, the interior a mixture of baroque
moulding on the walls, scented fog, and the occasional laser ray
shooting out at a roomful of really tall guys and one notable alt-porn
director. We think we heard someone call the whole thing a "sensual
brothel" and we’d have to agree.
We'd like to talk about how awesome the sets were, but we were
distracted by the cheap drinks, the intermittent popping of
balloons and the middle-aged lesbian couple who were stuffing free
copies of The FADER into their purses while declaring that the whole
soireé made them wonder why they haven't partied in over five years.
Hours had gone by the next time we saw them, yet they were still
dancing like champs in the corner while us
twentysomethings went off to score some bacon-wrapped hot dogs on the
sidewalk before going home to our cats. Youth truly is wasted on the young.
