Thrintage: Urban Jungle

April 09, 2009

Every other Thursday, FADER style contributor Bethany Cosentino crosses boroughs, counties and states to find us fine thrifted and vintage pieces on the cheap for her column, Thrintage. This week she traveled to Bushwick, Brooklyn to check out Urban Jungle on Knickerbocker Street. Read her thoughts and peep the steals after the jump.

It’s beginning to reach that time again when winter coats get tossed under the bed. To celebrate, FADER intern Alex and I took a walk to Bushwick to get some thrifting done at Urban Jungle, a giant warehouse thrift center on Knickerbocker Street. Filled to maximum capacity with everything from worn vintage shirts, to $2 books, and the craziest amount of shoes you’ve ever seen, the perk is it can all be found at a reasonable price. Out of trend from most Brooklyn thrift stores, you can walk away from Urban Jungle with several items without breaking the bank. What’s better for spring than a soft, vintage shirt for only $7 dollars? Nothing! That’s why I bought three of them. I also found the craziest wicker purse for only $5, Alex found a striped Beach Boys-meets-New Mexico vest for $8, and with my knack for searching out embroidered pieces, I found a few Mexican style dresses and a blouse, each for under $15. One of the dresses has fruit all over it, which is very evocative of summer, and I can’t wait to wear it while walking around eating cold watermelon slices. To top everything off, I found a killer pair of multi-colored leather shoes with a side buckle for $10.

Urban Jungle is independently owned by the same family who owns Vice Versa, a store I visited a few weeks back for Thrintage. These guys do not overcharge you, they just sell great stuff for great prices, and they are all super friendly. Grab a Kombucha, throw on a light jacket, and head to Urban Jungle, because chances are your wardrobe needs a little seasonal revamp.
