Paris is Burning Redux from Crystal Castles

May 03, 2010

We heard earlier this year that filmmaker Jennie Livingston might be turning her cult vogue documentary, Paris is Burning, into a musical, a production that could be utterly amazing or thoroughly awful depending on the execution. Video director Jeffrey Deng successfully channels the '80s realness of the movie for Crystal Castles' new video, cutting and pasting ballroom scenes against the track so diligently it feels like "Empathy" could have been the original soundtrack. Sift through the outfits frame by frame, from the Breton stripes to the mohair sweaters for men (see brodarte), and you'll notice that the killer looks might have been cooked up this side of the millennium too.
