Premiere: Matthew Dear, You Put A Smell On Me (Breakbot Remix) MP3

November 17, 2010

The original "You Put A Smell On Me" is a twisted song, no explanation necessary, read the title. Repression, sadomasochism, Depeche-Mode-Nine-Inch-Nails: the Matthew Dear discourse is well worn territory. And as much as we're into that, hearing that this remix isn't is a major thrill. Breakbot pitches up Dear's monotonous growl nearly into R&B territory, doubling it with a helium-huffing backup singer. It's not creepy anymore, it's actually quite charming. The biggest shock of this remix, though, is how the backing track turns a total 180, "Smell" reimagined as an electro-funk LinnDrum bliss/blaze-out. Take a ride in your big black car, eh Dear? Why the hell not, are we going to beach? Can we listen to "My Boo" after? This remix plus some more come out November 23rd, the same day Matthew Dear, Games and Noveller are playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg (swag!).
