DayToday: Wiz Khalifa Returns To Pittsburgh

February 04, 2011

On this seventh episode of DayToday's third season, Wiz Khalifa hasn't been home to Pittsburgh in weeks. Now he's back and lounging at the bakery, preparing to run errands and perform a homecoming show. Everyone in the room is wearing at least one piece of grey sweat-clothes, cradling laptops with Converse stickers on them. Star the dog is putting her (his?) cute behind where she (he?) pleases. They make a run to the car store to look at large living vans. Who is this kid his friend, talking to himself asking: "Pippins, where did you get those, I don't know, unreleased?" They check into a hotel, take a Dixie cup toast at the desk then settle in, dampening a towel and placing it under the room door to buffer the smoke. Dinner is champagne, steak and potatoes. Wiz will be in the hotel for three days and packed his favorite bong and a complete studio of equipment for the residency. There's a black and white montage that pairs "Up" from Kush and Orange Juice with footage of Wiz's meticulous hands, exemplary boat-technique joint rolling and Wii bowling throws timed perfectly with the music. At 3am Wiz is done for the day, picks at his hair and sings from his resin-lined throat into the mirror, every day I'm looking for a home away to take her home. It sounds kind of like a Carrie Underwood song, or the words of someone who's needed everywhere and learning to command and be comfortable in the places he goes.
